From our friends,'Save our Suffolk Swifts' on X

"Apologies for straying off topic but the first House Martins and Swallows are now arriving back & Suffolk is bone dry. If you have an open area create a mud splat and keep it moist until we have rain if you can. Here is a big splat in Woolpit!"

A few white feathers are fairly irresistible, a few scattered near the mud tray can help to get all the birds in the colony interested if they seem to be reluctant to find the mud.

Interested in finding out more about how you can help / like a talk for your local group ? Get in touch 🙂

Can you create a mud pie for house martins? It’s been pretty dry spring, making it difficult for birds building nests

Plastic plant trays can be useful for keeping the mud wet for longer, good on hard surfaces, they can even be used successfully on flat roofs if safe/ practical to do so. 1/2

Save Our Suffolk Swifts provide free surveys and advice, we can supply nest boxes too. 4 nest boxes have gone to an Aldeburgh property today where the owners are fortunate to have Swifts nesting already. Their colony will spread into the Swift boxes over time. #Suffolk @suffolkbirdgroup.bsky.social
