She's in the private sector, so she suffered through some Zoom meetings. They seemed to think her inability to speak was kind of funny.

thanks. I'm definitely almost all the way back. I wouldn't have even known if my wife didn't return a positive test with much worse symptoms. She's been only able to whisper for 2 days now.

and we're both boosted. I did get mine over a week earlier, so that might have something to do with our different experience.

@profsje.bsky.social This could have been worse. I got pretty severe insomnia for ~3 days, which I made determining what was illness & what was extreme tiredness hard to parse. Wife has the razor blade sore throat, which I missed out on. Do not recommend.

Our home for the coming months is a 750 sqft converted barn with 2 adults & 2 large dogs. It's pretty nice considering, but getting to the 2nd floor requires using the narrowest spiral staircase on Earth. Dogs have to use the outdoor stairs to get to the bedroom.

I am almost through the COVID part. I tested negative multiple times, but my wife caught it from me & has worse symptoms & she did eventually test positive.

Last week was the penultimate week of an busy academic term with two big classes. We also had to move out of our house on Oct 1 as well as finishing clearing out the basement + garage & take down fences for a job that will last 4ish months.

Do you know what I didn't need on top of that?

Does anyone else's purchasing/OSP give them crap about spending grant money on gloves? They claim it should be covered by indirects as a general office/lab supply. PPE?!? #CHEMSKY

Again, we are in big trouble if we continue on this trajectory. Legacy media is dying anyway, but this is bad.

So, Kimmel got shelved & what he said didn't even fall into the category of what's gotten other online commenters into hot water—statements about Kirk's death ranging from insensitive to ghoulish. He made a statement about MAGA types trying to score political points & ABC pretended it was anti-Kirk
scburdet.bsky.social
He was correctly pointing out that MAGA commenters were trying to tag the left/democrats with association with the assassin—even before there was any verifiable information about the suspect. At worst, it was an awkwardly phrased comment that could easily be presented dishonestly or misconstrued
scburdet.bsky.social
Clipped out "the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them" sounds like he was saying Tyler Robinson was part of the MAGA movement (that's not being derogatory toward Kirk), but that's not what he was saying
scburdet.bsky.social
I've taken a big step back on commenting about political things (thanks Elon!) but this makes non sense. I watched both @jimmykimmel.com Mon/Tue episodes. The questionable statement wasn't even directed at Charlie Kirk. He had pointed out how horrific the assassination was & sent his condolences

A grim reminder: these people will never be satisfied. There’s no point at which they will say “we’ve won, let’s enjoy life.” They will always be looking for someone else to punish, to revile, to dehumanize. They’re empty without that.

Another consequence of the loss of twitter is missing news like this in real time. I came across the obituary while updating my slides for GenChem. The great Darleane Hoffman died earlier this month at 98. A true giant of the field.

Google Photo's recent update is emblematic of how the AI revolution is going to change our lives. They replaced some of their tools with AI features. Now, I can't crop images exactly the way I want to quickly, but AI can can very efficiently produce a version of the photo I definitely don't want

Nothing is more Facebook than multiple people wishing someone who died 3 years ago a happy birthday*

*I am not talking about the ones using this as an opportunity to remember & pay tribute to their departed friend.
