I do have a soft spot for computer programming books from the 1970s.
Book entitled Computer Programming in the BASIC Language, by Neal Golden (second edition). The cover is royal blue with an irregular checkerboard pattern in red and white. Book entitled COMPUTERS by K.N. Dodd. The cover features a stylized spool of magnetic tape and a series of punchcard holes. Book entitled COMPUTER GRAPHICS: A Programming Approach, by Steven Harrington. The cover is maroon with a pattern of dots in light blue and cream.

Not easy to find Kernel magazine in Turin. But got it shipped overseas and it’s worth it. No better read on the intersection of tech and society. (h/t @kuppermann.xyz )

Robert Longo's video for "Bizarre Love Triangle" by New Order remains a great piece of 1980s contemporary art and really captures a moment of time in our burgeoning information society. www.robertlongo.com/films/neword...

Last week I watched a city burn from a rooftop in Kathmandu.

Here are my reflections on what sparked a revolution: a government social-media ban, rage at corruption, and the unchecked power of global tech.

Some of these #Kathmandu fires are the houses of politicians. "Protesters set fire to the house of Minister for Communication and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung in Lalitpur." And there are others. (via kathmandupost.com/national/202...)

The air is beginning to smell like burning tires.

#Kathamndu protests have spread to Patan-Lalitpur. Here’s the scene outside my office.

After killing 19 protesters yesterday, the Prime Minister refuses to resign. So the streets remain dangerous today.

Very impressive design fail. Which box is checked, which box is not? Chef’s kiss IRS.

Well it’s not like Meta has its hands clean. Perhaps telecom should be a public utility?

I’m currently using Beeper here in Kathmandu to message in WhatsApp. It is working so far.

But I’m also encouraging people to switch to Signal.

Loving this Padmasambhava stencil around Kathmandu. The Olivetti graffiti in Ivrea is the only equivalent in terms of coolness.

Can software express critical reflections on its own nature in the same way post-modern architecture does?

I don't have the answers, but I wrote a long text with some early thoughts: tomasp.net/architecture/

Same goes for Benjamin Franklin, btw, who changed his variolation skeptic ways after losing a child to smallpox. (variolation was imperfect, with a ~2% mortality rate, though mortality from natural infections with smallpox was around 14.6%)

Benjamin Franklin in his autobiography said:
"In 1736 I lost one of my sons, a fine boy of four years old, by the smallpox taken in the common way. I long
regretted bitterly and still regret that I had not given it to him by inoculation.
This I mention for the sake of the parents who omit that operation, on the supposition that they should never forgive themselves if a child died under it; my example showing that the regret may be the same either way, and that, therefore, the safer should be chosen."]
Good medical care requires making the right decisions-to test, treat or do nothing—in the face of uncertainty.? Franklin came to believe he

My only regret as an artist is the 15 years I didn’t use Emacs while working in ads & media.

A lot of research & documents are locked away in things like Evernote, DevonThink, & Asana. But stuff from
my early computer science days is accessible.

Not to mention the other opportunity costs…

It’s a computational notebook, where all cells are running all the time. Fascinatingly, the UI is the code, adorned with small widgets. I think legibility could be improved for other users, but this points to possibilities in other domains.

It's my experience (from 25 yrs of teaching) that "learning management" tools like Canvas do nothing to facilitate student learning & make my job MORE, not less, time consuming. That additional time I put in contributes zero to improving the student experience. But Canvas gets our money regardless.

Only in Italy would someone think to smash a flaky, lovely looking slice of Börek in a panini press before serving.

This is a crime against pastries.

I just love this part. I know it’s silly but putting all of these together so I can see the color gradient is so pleasing.
