Well done you lot, that's fab - here's to another 17 🍾

Thanks Christoph, yes sorry I meant if you knew why the OA version had gone. Have a copy of the T&F corporate explanation on the acquisition already, but thanks!
scholtom.bsky.social
@christophsorg.bsky.social are you able to share any details on this, how you found out, why it happened etc? My colleagues and I at @copim.bsky.social are very interested in developments like this in schol comms, including researching an article on T&F's takeover of AUP.
scholtom.bsky.social
I wonder what happened here then? Did T&F pull the plug on the official OA version? If so, how is that possible and for what reasons?

Great article/primer on unintended consequences of the clumsy new 'online safety legislation'. What a clusterfuck.
kjsanders.bsky.social
Sharing again, because state censorship is a major threat for open access publishing and for the right to read.

Our colleagues @simonxix.com and @kjsanders.bsky.social express some of Copim's concerns around the UK's Online Safety Act 2023, with particular consideration of how the Act creates barriers to scholar-led open access publishing (and for their readers): doi.org/10.21428/785... @copim.bsky.social

This is the no-fee open-access model for books I designed and worked on with @scholtom.bsky.social -- real-world impact from authors who benefited from it.

The one conspiracy theory I allow myself is that he faked his own death and is living happily on an island somewhere, sipping Mai Tais.

Fair enough yep I'm sure it's tricky.

Can't repost this enough. A very misleading headline to a very clear message in the content of the article: OA is not the problem, big publishers and APCs & TAs are the problem.
openingthefuture.bsky.social
Incredibly frustrating title to this article 'OA economic model branded ‘fundamentally broken’ by Jisc' what they mean (and say in the article) is TA's don't work, not OA "https://www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-open-access-2025-7-open-access-economic-model-branded-fundamentally-broken/
scholtom.bsky.social
but the headline is very frustrating: making it sound like OA is the problem whereas the article does a good job of explaining that it's the publishers and their APC & transformative agreement models that are the problem
scholtom.bsky.social
Yeah this is great to see it written out like this "Any hope that [universities are] going to pay more into a publishing system… looks extractive" 🔥🙌
scholtom.bsky.social
WHOOP WHOOP! That's fantastic! 🥳 Well deserved my friend ✒️❤️

Two data points:

academics at Trinity College Dublin elect its Provost (and held on to the right to do so a few years ago);

after Bath spectacularly drove out the VC in 2019, there was a review of governance and a big cut in the boss's pay: Bath is not currently threatened with mass redundancies.

It will be great when we finally democratise higher education governance and we'll look back on this strange period where people from business were given control of our universities and then ran them into the ground.

Your snippets are always useful, thanks! Still struggle to see how this kind of revenue year on year can be sustainable for HEIs. At some point, their budgets surely can't keep feeding the hungry mouths of the big beasts?
