Today in Turkey’s parliament, Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) co-chair Tuncer Bakırhan echoed what we’ve been saying for years: Turkey needs strategic, historic alliances with the Kurds—growing together and rising together.👇
1- Against this backdrop, as we’ve said many times, Turks and Kurds must solve their problems together and on their own terms, in the mutual interest of both societies. Even if we are not admirers of Öcalan, the core idea he once framed—that “Kurds and Turks should grow together”—...👇
“Alavere dalavere, Kürt Mehmet nöbete(Wheeling and dealing; Kurdish Mehmet, on guard duty)”: In Turkey that rhyme has widely been used to mean: after the wheeling-and-dealing, the same person ends up stuck with the duty / risk / burden.

2-moment strongly suggests that they were not sent without at least tacit approval—or encouragement—from Ankara. Turkey was comfortable with the March 30 agreement framework, which was arguably the most favorable arrangement the Kurds could realistically secure under current regional conditions.

3-That framework included strong elements of decentralization. However, the Syrian Kurdish leadership believed that they could extract more concessions from Damascus and external actors.

4- By pushing beyond what Ankara, Damascus and other external actors (the US, Saudis, etc.) were prepared to tolerate, they have overestimated their leverage in a rapidly shifting geopolitical environment.

Before this meeting, Iraqi MP Ala Eldari also delivered harsh remarks: “I don’t even know who Hakan Fidan is. We are Iraq—with a 7,000-year history. Show respect to Iraq. Otherwise, just as we disciplined your ancestors, we will discipline you too.”👇
Iraq summons Turkey’s ambassador over Hakan Fidan’s “Iraq phase” remarks on the PKK. Days later, Fidan receives Iraq’s defense minister—without a tie.

The Syrian Kurds wouldn’t be in this situation if they had heeded our calls—and Öcalan’s—and hadn’t put excessive trust in the U.S. and Israel. They should have moderated their demands, remembering that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.👇
