saw SEND HELP. was mixed on it for most of the runtime, but the ending knocked it out of the park and bumped it up to 4 stars.

daaaamn that must have been wild. we haven't seen any actual crow-hawk battles in our neighborhood, but they're definitely all around us. the most we see of the crows is them bickering with each other over chicken food in our coop πŸ˜†

this makes me feel sooooooo fucking old
I'm so old they're now remaking great movies that flopped on their initial release that I saw in empty theaters!

There's no reason to remake THE MIST.

fun fact: hawks are predators of chickens, and hawks and crows are mortal enemies, so chickens have learned to recognize crows' squawks as a kind of alarm bell. we're lucky enough to have crows in our neighborhood, and whenever they start squawking, our chickens know to take shelter.

i was a huge fan of THE MIST back in the day, but it didn't hold up quite as well as i'd hoped on rewatch. also, seeing a second film adaptation of a book that i watched the first adaptation of in theaters makes me feel very old 😬

i'm not much of a crier anymore (i think i expended ~90% of my lifetime supply of tears in high school in college), but that was legitimately moving and i could feel some brief action in my tear ducts.

finally watched the halftime show and wowowow. i got chills several times and almost teared up in the end. i'm no expert but that's the best halftime show i've seen by a wide margin. i levitated out of my seat when ricky martin came on.

pleased to learn that, after months of waiting, my dvd copy of SHARKS N DA HOOD is finally in the mail

I try not to talk about politics here, but I’m reading Naomi Klein’s excellent book DOPPLEGANGER and felt compelled to share this passage. It’s a crucial and incisive point about modern political attitudes that I haven’t seen anyone bring attention to.

a few years ago, he was in the bay area and stopped for a meal at sol food, this incredible puerto rican restaurant in marin, and i thought that was pretty neat (I wasn’t there, just heard about it)

I don’t listen to his music and i’m not watching the superbowl, but bad bunny always seemed like a chill dude to me

actually on second thought, I’d argue that the long walk DOES depict average working people. still, most of these movies don’t. a good observation!!

this is interesting so I’ll keep going

wake up dead man: kinda?
roofman: yes
smashing machine: no
after the hunt: no
caught stealing: yes
weapons: yes
war of the world: no
influencers: mmmm no
naked gun: yes
happy gilmore 2: no
February 9, 2026 at 1:42 AM
was curiou so I looked at the 10 most recent releases I’ve watched to see if they depict β€œaverage working people”

mercy: kinda?
bone temple: ???
keeper: I’ll say no
wicked pt2: no
marty supreme: no
black phone 2: yes
primate: no
him: no
OBAA: no
long walk: no
eternity: no
Does anyone else feel that in recent decades movies rarely depict average working people? In the 70s and 80s we had movies about struggling families, stories about people most of us could understand. Not necessarily about the struggle, but where it was an obvious factor.

I heard both basket case and black hole sun for the first time on the same night when I was ~9 and I’ll never forget it. perhaps the most formative experience in my growth as a music listener.

your list is making me realize that my chart has a serious white bias to it. my bad, fixing that now.

i've already created a separate tab w/ version 1.5, incorporating a lot of your suggestions. thank you for helping improve this!!

Omitting pre-clueless movies is admittedly a personal decision based on my age (born in 85). But also like - putting dazed and confused in the same category as 10 things I hate about you just feels kinda weird?
February 8, 2026 at 1:50 AM
I wavered on remember the titans, haven’t seen it in years and can’t remember much about it. I did see DDG recently but I couldn’t remember if it had many/any scenes that take place in actual high school?
February 8, 2026 at 1:48 AM
Oooh these are some great additions/omissions, thanks! Black and White feels weird to include (and I haven’t seen it), but it’s stacked cast-wise and couldn’t think of a valid reason to disqualify it

other edge cases: DROP DEAD GORGEOUS, PLEASANTVILLE, DAZED & CONFUSED
February 7, 2026 at 11:42 PM
methodology/restrictions:

-date range is from the release of CLUELESS to 9/11
-only includes actors/actresses who played teens
-doesn't include movies that take place in college
-edge cases i'm still on the fence about include WILD THINGS, OCTOBER SKY and BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER. thoughts??
