Disability rights groups, mental health professionals, drug policy experts, civil rights groups, and housing & homelessness groups are speaking out about the extreme recommendations posed in Trump's latest Executive Order.
Latest Trump Executive Order cruelly targets people experiencing homelessness, people with mental illness, and people who use substances The order, issued July 24, directs federal agencies to prioritize efforts that shift “homeless individuals into long-term institutional settings… through use of civil commitment”; provide assistance to state and local governments to adopt civil commitment and institutional treatment”; enforce prohibitions on “open illicit drug use” and “urban camping”; “remove encampments”; expand drug courts’; end support for “housing first” policies; and end grants that fund harm reduction and safe consumption.”
“Under the guise of “restoring order,” this order attempts to erase evidence-based approaches like harm reduction, decimate social service infrastructure, and reintroduce the kind of punitive policies that disproportionately target Black, Brown, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, and unhoused communities.

While the highest office in the land uses stigmatizing language to describe people in crisis, we offer compassion, healthcare, housing support, and a path toward healing. While they invoke criminalization, we invoke community.

At San Francisco AIDS Foundation, we will continue to fight for the communities we serve!” – Tyler TerMeer, PhD, CEO, SFAF
“The order frames drug use as the caues of homelessness and promotes forced treatment, civil commitment, and other coercive responses–none of which address the root causes or offer real solutions… For decades, the U.S. has tried to arrest its way out of the drug and overdose crisis. The result? Nearly one million lives lost to overdose. Families devastated. People stuck in a cycle of going to jail and right back to the street, without real help.” –Drug Policy Alliance

It's not glamorous work, but budget advocacy continues to be one of the incredible ways our policy and advocacy team--and many HIV activists who are part of the HIV Advocacy Network (HAN)--help to ensure that HIV and AIDS services continue to be prioritized by our local elected officials.

More bad news (sorry).

Many folks may have never heard of the USPSTF before, but it's an important group of experts that reviews research and gives guidance to healthcare providers. Playing politics with this panel will have implications for healthcare delivery in the U.S.

Dr. Siever was an outspoken advocate who took bold action to establish better systems of care for gay and bi men. He created spaces where we could feel free and open to discuss the concerns in our lives and seek supportive care–without judgement.

Rest in power Dr. Siever.
