“The perfect blend of spice and horror”
This book takes many dark and chilling themes and a creepy setting and blends them together with the spice just perfectly. I loved the romances between Meya and her two loves and how both unfolded differently but just as naturally. When we meet Meya, she is already on the run and just trying to survive, the full weight of what she has endured has not yet hit her when even more trauma comes her way. This book is about vampires and steamy romance, yes. But it's also about Meya re-learning how to be a human being and finding herself again after so much hardship has beaten her down. There is a scene at the start that sticks in my mind because even those the people who hurt Meya are dead, it's clear she still doesn't feel safe yet; her mind is still living through the trauma even though her body is safe (or as safe as it can be in the castle of a vampire....). This is true for most trauma survivors. It takes a long time for the mind to finally realize the danger is past and this was so perfectly portrayed in this book. Come for the spice and horror, stay for the healing and trauma recovery.

Erotica and horror can make for entertaining bedfellows, but they can be a difficult act to balance. If the story leans too heavily into horror, it can make the erotic scenes feel tawdry, there to shock the audience as much as the acts of violence. If its eroticism is the overpowering factor, it can make the horror itself feel cheap, giving it a B-grade type of feel.
Thankfully, My Lord by L.B. Shimaira manages to balance these two components, ensuring both aspects complement each other. With a strong sense of character that examines its protagonist’s trauma as it tells a story about her growth, My Lord becomes something stronger than a simple combination of erotica and horror.

I just put this book down, and “WOW” is all I can say. I didn’t know what to expect going into this other than a dark fantasy full of polyamory and queer themes, but that’s just from what I know about the author. This book takes the reader into a dark fantasy world where men aren’t what they seem, human servants are disposable commodities, and love is found in the most unlikely of places. Whatever you’re thinking, this book will take you elsewhere. You won’t expect it, but you’ll love the ride. The mystery behind the darkness is worth wading into it, and the intrigue behind every twist and turn will have you turning the page with anticipation, wanting more.

Shimaira has penned a frightening story with BDSM aspects and polyamorous love, all with consent at the front and center. There are content warnings for this book that one should heed, but it is a lot of bloody fun.

Sometimes healing looks like writing a Backrooms comedy with a brat persona that ends up pretty steamy, but in the weirdest and most hilarious way. (Snippets are SFW)

“Hey, big boy,” I teased. “I’m right here. Not running. Just a helpless soul open for attack.”
I furrowed my brow as the next growl reverberated. It sounded more like a house creaking in a storm. The shuffling resembled something large shifting across carpet…
My pulse quickened and I sat forward as I looked around. Whatever was out there, it had to be huge. I wanted to hold onto the hope that I could affect the environment around me, but the more the growling became creaking, the more I feared I’d completely misunderstood what was watching me. I was certain I’d felt a shift in the atmosphere, though. Something less threatening — something more curious than murderous.
“Hey, I’m just having some fun,” I said as I swallowed down the anxiety. I stood from the chair and stepped forward, my phone still in my hand. My head jerked up as the lights flickered.
And then I saw it; one of the walls rippled ever so slightly. Was the place itself alive?

“Holy shit,” I mumbled as I spun around. Another deep creak came from behind me, and I noticed the dead end had moved closer. Yeah, the place was definitely alive, and I was being watched by something on a cosmic scale. I tried to calm my racing heart. It still didn’t feel threatening, there was no sense of danger in the air. It was terrifying, of course, but my theory of being connected with the environment was proving to be true; I could sense that I wasn’t in danger. It truly did answer to the psyche of the person who was present.
I noticed a mirror had formed on the wall beside me, and I approached it after slipping my phone back into my pocket. It was made of intricate silver and full-body in length. When I touched the surface, it felt oddly warm. The air had grown a bit warmer too, and when the lights flickered again, my reflection had gone out of sync with my body.
“Whoa, that’s trippy as hell.” I stared at my own face, but it reflected an expression of curiosity that was somewhat primal. Its eyes looked me up and down slowly as if sizing me up, and when I moved my arm, its own movement that mirrored mine lagged a few seconds behind. Was it sizing me up?
I cleared my throat and put on a grin as I put my hands on my hips. “Getting an eyeful? Be careful how you stare, I might think you’re coming onto me.” The confidence was feigned, but I wasn’t about to show it that I was nervous. It didn’t look like it was sizing me up for an attack anyway, so it was probably safe to screw around. Probably.

As part of my healing journey, I'm learning how to explore liminal space and Backrooms stuff in a new light instead of the old, icky coping way I used to. They became triggering, but I'm writing a story with the Backrooms now that uses humor and isn't super serious.

Holy shit!🤩 The audiobook for Control You turned out GOOD. I hyperfocused entirely on it for like 24 hours (with sleep in between of course), and I love it! Yep. Definitely doing more short stories. Erotica especially is so, so fun.

Am I back in my voice acting era? I think so 🥰 It's been too long.

I am actually kind of impressed with myself today. I've gotten good at doing 'lawyer' work when fighting with health insurance companies, and this time, I found out I can prove UH was gaslighting me and lying. It actually makes it more distressing when you see the proof. These people are evil.
