Every season of SNW has to have a Spock high jinks episode, and this one came sooner than expected in Wedding Bell Blues. We'll discuss why Spock is only allowed to be funny in silly episodes and how disturbingly one sided Pike/Batel is. Then we'll tell you what we're binging lately!

BTW, neither of us realized in the moment that 5th Dimension wrote the song Wedding Bell Blues when Ryan made that Mxyzptlk joke. We guess it was just in the ether...

Sharing a BTS shot from The Black Hole we’ve never seen before. This is from the utterly flawless meteor in the hallway scene. Shocking that it was done on plain old blue screen.
Two pictures from Disney’s The Black Hole. The top shot shows three actors running in front of a blue screen with red lighting cast on them. The bottom picture shows the completed composite with the actors on the above picture running on a gangway as a large, flaming rock rolls toward them.

I'm going to have to discuss "This is Starfleet" with @ryanthomasriddle.com before reading any takes on it. I don't want any of my mixed reactions to be explained or backed up before I can vent them at him first.

Yup. “Battlefield” is a classic alllivesmatter story. We talked about this two years ago. The idea that Kirk would have drinks with the oppressor is insane.

If someone replaced Paul Wesley with a muppet no one would notice.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier premiered 36 years ago today with a plot so exciting they had to put seatbelts in the theater. It’s also the only movie in the franchise with no clear theme. Listen to our review where we try to figure out what the mountain means.

Kick off pride month by revisiting our amazing Spirk discussion with guests Don and Catherine. We talk about the history of slash fiction, Roddenberry’s relationship with slash authors, and a little known Nimoy produced film where he plays a gay man in prison.

The Black Hole (1979): USS Cygnus into the meteor storm, art by Peter Ellenshaw
The image is a vibrant and chaotic painting depicting a large, dark spacecraft amidst meteors in space. The spacecraft is viewed from a low angle, emphasizing its size and the intricate details of its structure, which includes numerous lights, antennae, and a central tower. The hull appears dark blue or black, contrasting sharply with the bright, fiery explosion erupting around it. A meteor storm in The Black Hole (1979)

Dan Holland being able to parse anything Vincent said probably makes him one of the most effective captains in sci-fi. Darmok made more sense than Vincent.

Let’s say your robot says “you can’t unscramble eggs” and “a good offense is the best defense”. Would you then understand he wants you to use the Cygnus’s probe ship to escape now that your own ship has been destroyed? We feel like we’d die trying to figure it out.
Vincent the robot is saying something cryptic and stupid and somehow his crew mates understand him.

That is interesting. Also, Nelson went overseas to recruit Schell personally. Schell thought he was messing with Nelson when he told him he really wanted to be in something like this great miniseries he saw recently. Nelson said “I directed that.”

By the end of his appearance in the movie Durant is practically writhing with lust as Reinhardt gives commands on the bridge. He can’t even look at McCray when she speaks to him. It’s one thing to be generally excited about a mission but he particularly can’t take his eyes off his crush.
Durant sits while McCray holds his shoulder and tries to convince him to leave. He sits forward, his eyes looking past McCray to Reinhardt off screen Aftern McCray calls him over to talk, Durant keeps his eyes on Reinhardt.

Perkins had a long term boyfriend early in his career. He knew ways to communicate desire for another man, one of which is to look at his lips as much as at his eyes. It’s a really wonderfully subversive performance for a Disney film.
Durant smiles goofily again at an off camera Reinhardt. Harry Booth smiles knowingly in the background. Durant holds up a glass with wonder as he realized Reinhardt is directly toast him at this moment. Harry Booth seems unphased. Durant eyes Reinhardt’s lips as the latter speaks to Kate McCray. Durant again smiles goofily at Reinhardt while Kat McCray looks on unamused.

In this scene Reinhardt, who is an obvious megalomaniac, telling Perkins’ Durant that he’s a man in search of something. The camera lingers on Perkins’ face for a while as it runs the gamut of emotions of a man figuring something out. And that something is “Does he like me as much as I like him?”
Durant looks up in wonder at the man dressing him down. Durant side eyes nervously to see if his reactions are being noticed by the others. Durant looks down in realization. Durant makes a realization.

Anthony Perkins’ performance in The Black Hole is extremely unsettling. He’s nervous throughout, especially when he meets Reinhardt. The chemistry between the two is unmissable. Perkins downright falls in love and mostly seems worried others will notice. Here’s a thread of his best horny faces:
Alex Durant stands awe struck at Reinhardt, who is off camera. Harry Booth doesn’t feel the same and scowls suspiciously. Durant stands on the bridge of the Cygnus with rest of the crew behind him. Durant smiles as Reinhardt points at him. No one else seems amused. Durant smiles goofily at Reinhardt as the latter jibes a flippant Harry Booth. Kate Mccray is less than excited.

Most of the time the Palomino's holographic display was done in camera. In the first pic you can see the projection hitting Earnest Borgnine's arm and casting a shadow ↙️. In the second pic it's clear the effect was composited in during post and a matte was cut around Joseph Bottom's body↘️.
A still from the Disney movie The Black Hole. Earnest Borgnine, Yvette Mimieux, and Anthony Perkins stand around a holographic display. A still from the Disney movie The Black Hole. Robert Forster sits at a console while Joseph Bottoms floats over to his station using the console to guide him.

This kind of depth of field without a split diopter? Robert Wise, eat your heart out.

Here’s more of Robert not being mad.
An excerpt of an interview with Robert McCall in Cinefantastique. It reads: During that period of time I produced initial designs for the Cygnus—it was called the Centaurus then—and worked up some ideas for the Palomino and for Vincent, too. However, my ideas were changed quite a bit after I left the film. Naturally I preferred the kinds of things I did. I rather deplored the changes, actually. I wanted very’ much to see the things I had designed used. So I was disappointed in that respect. But the Cygnus I designed and the general configuration of the existing model that was finally used in the film is pretty much the same configuration that I put together. The main difference came in the fact that Peter [Ellenshaw) wanted a very’ different kind of exterior textural look.
