In my experience, it's easier to sympathise with a fictional character, their upset is usually clear cut. I grew up with many instances of emotional abuse, and still seeing instances of emotional blackmail years later makes me extremely wary of people who appear upset. Genuine or otherwise.

Would you say this also extends to putting yourself too much into a creation such as a sona, and then feeling a complete loss of self when something happens that shatters said sona?

I can't comment on Europe, as we're not part of it anymore...But I do think the sheer ineptitude of our current government isn't doing anything to calm things down. If anything, they are stoking things up worse than any of the right wing parties...
