yeah i feel that. it's hard to put up with when you're a fan of the old script. whenever i see a line that sounds off i'll sometimes pull up the old script on trailsinthedatabase, see how they did it, and pine for what could've been

recent example here, the (voiced...) coffee line made no sense

i've been really enjoying trails in the sky 1st chapter but as someone who's picky about dialogue sounding natural, the new localization makes me want to cry (not complimentary) sometimes......

for the record i did like gungho's version of the riddle leading to this book better than xseed's version

when first played the game many years ago i got stuck on this riddle and gave up and never finished this quest. xseed made some changes to the riddle that made it needlessly difficult lol

I just read Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter's version of "31 Cypress Trees" and I have a few thoughts about how it's different from the XSeed version.

For the unaware, this somewhat off-putting book is speculated to be allegorical to a hidden truth about the world Trails takes place in. It's found after solving the final mysterious riddle in a series of optional, missable sidequests. It's returned to the librarian seeking it, then quietly nestled away in an out-of-the-way bookshelf in Zeiss Central Factory.

This won't be a comparison of translation accuracy, as I can't read Japanese well enough to know which one is closer. I'll just be comparing the words themselves.

Now, my comments:

The new version rhymes. This is nice (it's written like a poem after all), and I think could add to the sort of unsettling vibes that you can feel in the original, but...

The wording in the last page is kind of vague. You could read it like he planted another 32 cypress trees, and then 31 of those died. But with the context of the XSeed version we can see it's clearly meant to be summarizing the full journey on this page.

Possibly due in part to this vagueness, the new version loses out on the ominous vibe the XSeed version leaves you with. You go into the last page kind of subconsciously expecting it to be a happy ending--after all, the farmer stuck it out through all those failures and finally grew a tree. But then you get to the last lines:

The good farmer Sheprott
With his loving goodness for them all
The good farmer Sheprott
Brought thirty-one cypress trees to the depths of ruination

And you're like, oh damn. Is this even a good outcome? Is it okay that this guy sacrificed all those trees? Is he really a "good farmer"? And it's this feeling that gets you to think, what was this book really trying to say? Compare this to the new translation:

Gentle farmer Ciplot
Gave them love and care and trust.
Gentle farmer Ciplot
Lost thirty-one trees to the dust.

"Lost...to the dust" is more passive-sounding than "Brought...to the depths of ruination." It's not placing responsibility on the farmer. It's just like, okay? Too bad for him, I guess. This could be mitigated by changing it to something like "Turned thirty-one trees into dust" but even then it's just not as impactful. The last line in the XSeed version kind of slaps you in the face; it's very drastic.

The XSeed version is dissonant, insisting that Sheprott is a good, loving farmer who will kill as many trees as necessary until he gets one to grow. The GungHo version makes it sound like he's doing his best but just happened to have a bad run of it. He "gave them love and care and trust," but "lost" them anyway.

Like I said before, I love how the new version rhymes and I think that could really play into the ominous vibes. If the XSeed version rhymed it would be even better, I think.

i wish i could just recommend the remake over the original unconditionally but i feel like i'm gonna have to figure out whether the person i'm hypothetically talking to cares as much as i do about dialogue/personality etc. before deciding which version to recommend

the xseed script wasn't perfect (in fact the new script does read better in rare cases imo) but like, we could've had something really great if falcom had paid xseed to adapt their script instead of having some weird nonsensical grudge against them

it's one thing that they didn't bother being consistent with established terminology and names, but that doesn't bother me nearly as much as how they try to stick as closely as possible to the japanese sentence structures even when english speakers do not, in fact, talk like that

ughhhh ok i give up trying to make sky 1st work on steam deck. i fixed the performance for a bit by forcing a specific proton version but then i closed and relaunched the game and it's broken again even though i changed nothing
