@exeter.ac.uk English and Creative Writing Department has just posted a Digital Bookcase with links to profiles and publishers. It's fascinating to browse selections of the work of the department, including members of the CVS in the Long Nineteenth Century category.

Do you call it 'tatter ash'? Interesting. We always pronounced it 'tater ash' when I grew up in Manchester. From 'Potato Hash'.

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Brian Maidment this week. Brian and I collaborated for years on the Cotton Famine Poetry project, and it was a privilege to get to know a scholar whose work on labouring-class C19th culture was foundational. He will be much missed by many.

'Majestic', commented an admirably sardonic young man from another walking party.

We can do better. This is the basis of P B Shelley's conception of 'perfectibilty'. There is no good reason to stop trying to improve society.

I never knew how it was spelled, but in North Manchester we called it 'Ralivo'.
