I think gaming being mainstream has only helped further the artform. The problem is that the games that are front and center are just there to print money. So you end up with these optimized money grabs that are shells of what the developers actually wanted to create.

Shit, I just recently saw a trailer for a game called mouthwashing that had PS1/PS2 graphics and it only made me want to play it more. Finished it in 1 sitting, great game with a cool retro style.
