If I am reading the DC consensus correctly, there is a very high chance that IEEPA is invalidated by the Supreme Court around Feb 2026. Absolutely no reason for South Korea to cave easily before that.

Takaichi signaling renegotiation of the US Japan deal under Ishiba: It simply underscores how ludicrous the whole thing is. It’s late Roman empire stuff in the 21st century. South Korea is absolutely justified to drag its feet on the matter with tough asks.

* 2028/4/12: General election for the National Assembly will be held again. Note that this comes roughly 10 months after Jo's retirement. South Korean liberals have a good window to reshape the Supreme Court with the large majorities intact in the legislature.

* 2027/6/6: Term for Yoon-appointed Supreme Court Chief Justice, Jo Hee-de, ends as he hits the age limit of 70. Normally SC chief justices get 6 year terms, but Yoon's choice of relatively old Jo means that the term will be cut short at 3.5 years.
