🔭I loved CalSky🛰️the app to that tells you what you will see if you look up at the sky tonight. 🪐 I waited for someone to recreate it after it went offline but no-one did so I created it myself...💫

I didn’t do a great job of publicising this one last week, but the updated Gt Red Spot calculation/output is now live. This automation means you are getting the latest GRS position, as well as up to date drift rates if you need it for other apps.

Two hours of The Seven Sisters, yesterday night, using my cat and the Askar 60F. This is a great little scope. It comes pre-flattened, so no moving parts inducing tilt on the imaging train.
Stars are a bit blown out but I wanted to try and bring out the nebula.

Quite excited. Most Christmas’s I give myself a mini project to do. This year I’m going to attach an Astro cam to my old reflector telescope for <£100.
I just purchased a camera sensor for £50 and added some t ring adapters to my Christmas list 😁

One of these images is a close up of Jupiters moon Io taken from space. The other is an incredibly detailed and enhanced image of a loaf of bread taken in my kitchen just now.

If you could see though the rain clouds (snow clouds?) the moon would look like this tonight.
Who has a clear sky?

It’s a cold and damp day so I’ve put the bread maker on and lit the fire. Going to spend a couple of hours coding. Now that the Jupiter update is done, I’m going to work on Starlink trains and the history thread on imaging Jupiter.

I’ve been quiet on here for a few days. Lots going on (family member in hospital) so will be quiet for a bit. Normal service will resume shortly…

This year’s Grand Marshall for the University of Alabama’s homecoming parade orbited the Earth for 170 days. I interviewed NASA astronaut, and UA grad, Bob Hines on Alabama Public Radio about his mission aboard the International Space Station.

Voyager 1 reveals Io erupting — 9 active volcanoes, 300 km plumes, lava lakes. Io was the first body beyond Earth seen with live volcanism. Linda Morabito spots the plume in a nav image.

In 1979 Voyager 1 passed Jupiter at 280,000 km to image the planet & moons in high-res. It mapped radiation, disovered lightning. Delivered 18,000 photos: GRS close-up, Io volcanoes, Europa’s cracks. before flying on to Saturn
