Astrophysics PhD Candidate ✨ studies black holes and galaxy evolution 🌌Science Communicator (find me other places at “Space According to Skylar”)

Hi 🦋, I’m Skylar! I’m an astrophysics PhD candidate and a science communicator ✨ I do research on how black holes impact the galaxies they live in (amongst other things) but on here I talk about all sorts of stuff in the realm of space news, physics, astronomy, and general life in science stuff 🥰
Episode no. 6264 of a computational astrophysicist desperately trying to connect to the hands-on aspects of her field 😁

Actually had a blast visiting Kitt Peak today and can’t wait to share more about what I did and learned!! 🔭🧪

The one big casualty of this budget is Mars Sample Return. But that doesn’t mean we won’t ever collect the samples our rovers have gathered! There is still funding allocated to future missions to Mars, including ways to bring samples back to Earth. It just doesn’t continue the existing MSR program

This will now go to the senate, where it is very likely to pass! This is FANTASTIC news for astronomy. We spent a lot of last year fearing for the future of our field, but Congress’s rejection of the White House plans restores a lot of hope.

A bit of good news this week…Y’all may remember this graphic I made, showcasing what the President’s budget request would do to NASA’s science fleet (tldr it would decimate it). Well the house just passed a bill that soundly rejects these cuts, keeping NASA funding roughly the same as last year🧪🔭

I’m going on a little adventure to somewhere cool today…👀🔭

Want to hear about some of the cool science our authors are doing at #AAS247? Two of our authors are giving talks today!

Kicking us off at 10:10 AM in room 222c is Skylar Grayson ( @skylargrayson.bsky.social ) with her dissertation talk! 🔭

Happy AAS week to those who celebrate! If you’re attending catch my dissertation talk this morning 👀

As light travels through an expanding universe, it changes. And those changes can have some interesting implications for how we perceive time… 🧪🔭

My favorite experience: looking around the room during a conference session and realizing there’s not a single other woman there. It doesn’t happen frequently but it does still happen, and that is absolutely wild.

If you’re a PhD student, don’t fall into the trap of only caring about your research and nothing else. I love what I do for a living, but it’s not all that I am. There’s so much more waiting for you out there.

We’ve taken images of two supermassive black holes…why not more? 🧪🔭

One of the most impressive equation slides I’ve ever seen at a conference 😂 as the speaker said: don’t try to understand it, you shouldn’t try to understand it

In a shocking turn of events, the interstellar comet is still an interstellar comet and not an alien spaceship 🧪🔭

Haha a paper I just submitted was an attempt to although tbd on how well that worked

Paper day!!! My most recent first-author paper is officially published. I’ll make a post breaking it down soon but TLDR I compared X-Ray observations of hot gas around galaxies to cosmological simulations and it looks like simulations aren’t consistently able to match the real universe! 🔭🧪

I find this fundamental misunderstanding of science so fascinating. Eventually I’ll have figured out my thoughts enough to articulate why, but for now just gonna drop it here for your reactions 😅

Have you heard our standard model of cosmology might be wrong? A new paper puts forth some interesting evidence, let’s discuss! 🧪🔭

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. So where’s the evidence? 🔭🧪

If you live in the Phoenix area, come hear me talk at Four Peaks tomorrow!!!
Next Event Alert!!! Tuesday, Nov 4, join us at Four Peaks for extragalactic night! Come learn from ASU researchers about galaxies far far away ✨

Y’all we literally PAY thousands of dollars to publish in open access journals so that things AREN’T hidden!!! We love people knowing about the science that we do!

So I’m out here, explaining why there really is no evidence that the moon landing was faked (4/4)

That’s why I make videos like this. For those who get one side of a story that can sound very convincing. They don’t have the background, they probably have never seen these talking points before. In moments like this, it feels like much less of a waste of time. (3/4)
