Young Citz celebration of the Close Theatre 1965-1973 last night was superb. The spirit of 65 was there - and a commitment to live, innovative theatre. One other survivor from the '65 cohort and I were very moved. A huge welcome difference was the gender balance. Thank you once again Citizen's.

Been singing the mezzo line of this since I was 15. Helen Burness Cruikshank was a suffragette, a committed Scottish nationalist, and a founder member of the Scottish branch of the writers’ organisation PEN.
1886-1975. Good Bio here www.scottishpoetrylibrary.org.uk/poet/helen-c...
Helen Cruickshank
The poet Helen Cruickshank did much to promote, popularise, and chronicle the Scottish Literary Renaissance movement in the middle years of the 20th century.

The big one that no-one seems to have mentioned is Glasgow. Ritually murdered by BBC London every single time.

Despite my 11 years running the place, apart from overseeing the removal of the printing equipment from what was to become our big art room, I had no idea of this history. Thanks to Andy, again.

Off to the Citizen's, my haunt since John Cairney's 1960 Hamlet, for the opening of The Close, about the 1964 theatre club of which I was an enthusiastic member from day one. In Edinburgh I fetched supplies for the guys building the bar at the nascent Traverse Theatre. Everything seemed possible.

Filming in the NGS exhibition at the RSA, this morning early for our third Thomas Riedelsheimer film about Goldsworthy. Two rooms have only natural light. The effect of the changing light is fascinating.

I've been unable to put this down. Ditto most of Kehlmann's output. This one beautifully translated by Ross Benjamin.

This building, renamed Greyfriars Hall 2022 when Virgin Hotels incorporated it has nothing to do with Greyfriars Church. It was built as Cowgatehead Church for Rev Thomas Smith with money left for the purpose by his uncle-in-law, William Whyte. Opened 1862. More re them in my book 10 Scotland Street
