Heather scolds a grinning Piper, Boone laughs, and Romy gives the sweater a petrified look. Heather: "PIPER! What have I said about shoving dirty clothes in peoples's faces?" Piper: "Oops! Sorry!" Romy with an offputting smile: 'I... don't think this shirt's been washed for... a while.' She then concentrates on the scent with her eyes closed, which gives her the image of Alex on a wooden swing, wearing the same shirt. 'But the scent is distinct. I need to familiarize myself with it. Especially with everyone counting on me...' Heather sighs in relief. "Thanks, guys. I know it's a weird request. But if anyone can find him..." Boone interrupts excitedly, swooping Romy and Echo up in one arm while saluting with the other. "The terrific trio CAN! And WILL!!!"

Romy sighs a breath of relief. 'I don't know who she is. But I'm glad she showed up when she did.' She starts riding her bike past the water tower. 'I wonder if that hotel really is haunted? I guess I don't have any better options...' She looks up at the stars and smiles. "... mmm..." She continues riding her bike under the setting sun in a starry purple sky, past canyons and cactuses. 'I've never been in a town so quiet and desolate. Slumber isn't at ALL like New Bork... but I like that. Hardly anyone here. And the night sky is so clear. It looks like the stars could stretch on forever. Really puts into perspective how small the world is. How small I am. It makes being alone... a little less lonely. And somehow, it makes me feel like everything is gonna turn out okay." She comes to a screeching halt.

Heather tugs at her ear absentmindedly while going off on an explanation. In the background, we can see flashbacks of her asking Sky about where Alex is, Piper trying to take a picture of Alex with her camera only to find out he's disappeared, and Sky and Heather chuckling with relief to discover Alex eating cookies in the pantry, while Piper gasps dramatically. Heather: "That kit is always getting himself lost. Here one minute, gone the next. He's never too far off, though. Usually just caught up in a bit of mischief." Zoom-in on Heather's face. "But this time, he disappeared overnight." She continues from the other side of the desk toward an attentive Romy and Echo, and a Boone with his attention diverted elsewhere. "We've searched every corner of the house! The town, too. There really is no trace of him anywhere..." Echo: "Weird. You said you brought something with his scent on it?" Heather laughs, "OH YEAH! We thought Romy might be able to track him that way." Romy sweats nervously, "W-well... I'm no scenthound, but -" Piper suddenly interjects by shoving a striped cloth over Romy's snout. "HERE! Echo points to a map using a giant stick. The map shows where the three of them currently are, across from the saloon, library, arcade and a building labelled 136. An arrow points north and to the left, where the hotel is located. Echo: "No problem! Keep going straight past the saloon until you hit a wall. The take a left from the water tower. The path should lead you there the rest of the way!" She pulls Lester's paw. "Aaaaaas for you..." Les: "Hrrm... ?" Echo makes a sheepish expression. "We should probably get you to bed before you cause any more, er... 'public disturbances'. Come on." Lester yells excitedly as Echo leads him away, "Woooooo, YEAH! We're holdin' paws! I guess it's a date, then? GAHAHA! *hic*!" Echo: "Keep your voice down. The diurnals are trying to sleep... and I'm trying not to get tinnitus..." Romy looks back at Echo from atop her bike, with a smile.

"Don't you have anything better to do than scaring that poor little dog? Or... let me guess... you're probably waiting for your personal escort to walk you home." Lester laughs boisterously. "GAHAHA! *hic!* How perceptive of you, my good lady... to come to such a fine gentleman in need! Haha!" Echo, unamused, "Tch, yeah. Predictable." She then turns to Romy. "Anyway, more importantly... hey there, new girl! Need help finding that hotel?" Romy, brought to attention, "Oh... YES! Yes, I... that's exactly... thank you."

I know you guys don't get asked to do stuff like this..." The shot cuts to Echo and Boone listening to Heather, a chinchilla with short black hair, a few earrings/gauges and a shirt with a UFO on it. Heather: "... but Dallas is always so busy. I wasn't sure where else to go." Echo tilts her glasses thoughtfully. "Hm. With all the wanderings lately... it was only a matter of time." A bat in obscured glasses and a long orange trenchcoat appears, hand casually in her pocket. Lester shrugs playfully. "Aw, bloody carrion. Guess I'm in trouble again." Boone tenderly puts a hoof on Romy's shoulder. "Romy, listen..." A dinging bell catches their attention and perks their ears. Echo gives out a long, shivery yawn while hanging upside down in her napping position. "Well, that nap lasted... what - 30 minutes? 30 minutes in non-existent time. Which is still a perceived 30 minutes." She puts her glasses on, bumping into Boone as she walks. "Could've been longer if it weren't for SOMEONE belting showtunes in the lobby. For hours. Nonstop." Boone pulls his ears up mockingly. "Hey! You know karaoke is my way of relieving stress! Just wear earplugs if your big ears keep you awake!" He turns to Romy. "Anyway. Looks like we got a job to do, kid." He looks up sheepishly. "I... can't remember what we were talkin' about before." Then, thumbs-up: "... so just lemme know if it was important, okay?"

There's a pause, with Lester looking on at a sweaty, nervous Romy. Then he pulls up his drink and mentions non-chalantly, "Oh, yeah. Yeah. Ther's a motel... I think..." Romy: "R-really?" 'Oh, what a relief...' "Um... do you know where I could find it?" Lester smirks and goes "Ppppfth..." before erupting into noisy laughter that spooks Romy and causes them to look around to see if they're attracting attention. "GAHAHAHAHA! *hic*! The Slumber motel? YOU?! You really wanna... *hic!* ... stay THERE?" Romy: "W-well..." Lester laces an arm around Romy and taps on their chest, "Liiiiiiiiiiiisten... there's rumors 'bout that place, y'know." He bends down to whisper, "Now, you didn't hear it from me or nuffin'... but that place... they say it's..."

A loud "AHEM." breaks Romy out of their thoughts. She looks up, pool stick still in her mouth, as Boone looks down at her from on top of the table, sitting on all fours and concerned. "Romy? Just checkin' in. You doin' alright?" He tilts his head. "If you don't mind me saying... you've been kinda out of sorts all morning." Romy: "I HAVE?!" Boone: Uh-huh." He pokes at her head with a finger. "I know that head of yours by now. You're always thinkin'. Kinda keepin' to yourself." He continues observing her thoughtfully. "But I've never seen you worry over a game of pool. It's UNNATURAL. Something's bothering you, isn't it?" Romy scratches the back of her head, averting her eyes nervously. "Uh - unnatural? I'm not natural. I mean -" They gasp. "UNNATURAL! I'M PERFECTLY NATURAL!" Boone, not buying it: "Mm-hm."

Lester stands silently, smiling down at Romy in a somewhat creepy fashion. Romy looks up anxiously. 'He's not.. saying anything. What do I do now?' Lester takes a swig of his beer, then starts to circle around a nervous Romy, twiddling her fingers. Romy: "Um... I think I should be going home now..." Lester: *sniff sniff* You ain't goin' home. You new here, right?" Romy: "Actually, yes. I'm... looking for a place to stay. Would you know anywhere like that? Like... a hotel?" Lester looks at her silently again with a puzzled expression. Romy begins catastrophizing internally. 'Oh no, I said the wrong thing, didn't I? He's probably... oh... oh NO. That was inconsiderate! But... I can't take it back now. I already asked! Boone gasps dramatically: "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT???" We pan to an image of Boone placing a birthday hat on Echo's head while she averts her eyes from the birthday cake and room filled with decorations. Romy is thinking in the corner, and Lester is laughing drunkenly in the background. Boone: "Well, maybe we oughta change that!" Echo: "No. No, we don't." "How come? Is it 'cuz you don't like it when people sing the song?" Boone continues making dramatic expressions while going on about it. "This is an emergency! A travesty of catastrophic proportions! If Echo's never celebrated her birthday, that means..." He counts on his fingers. "25, 26, 27... that's twenty-seven birthdays we gotta catch up on!!!" He falls backwards with the back of his hand to his forehead. "It's kind of a lot... think we can manage it, Romy?" Romy is brought back to earth suddenly with a "Hah?" Boone looks down at Romy, offended, "... are you even listening... ?" Romy grins nervously through her teeth. "S-sorry! Thinking. Um." Boone pouts and slides his sunglasses over his eyes, where a beam of sunlight is hitting, reflecting and directing somewhere to the side. Romy, observing and thinking, 'Oh! That beam of light. It's casting a glow...' She pulls Boone's arm to keep him still. "Boone, stay here." Boone, clueless, "Beh?" "And uh... try not to move to much." "Oooooooooookay?" We see the sun beam hitting from his glasses to the Aries constellation on the wall, causing it to glow. Romy's attention turns to Lester's beer bottle, which he's holding upside down. She directs him to lift his arm to where the sun beam is directed. "A-and you. Can you move your arm up a little? Near the shoulder?" Les, tiredly, "Eh? What fer?" Echo shoves him into position. Lester lifts his arms in exasperation and shouts, "HEY! Tryin' ta pick a fight or somefink?" His bottle is positioned perfectly to direct and re-direct the light beam. Romy, with excited stars in her eyes: "Y-yes! Right there, exactly!" Lester keeps still with his arms up, poker-faced: "... *hic*!". Romy then shyly regards Echo. "And Echo? Iiiiiiis.. it okay if I touch you?" She sweats and grins nervously. Echo's heart rate increases and she blushes. "Ah? Er. Of course. However you... need." Romy takes Echo's hand in her own, and gently leads her. 'The third river... it'd have to be Scorpio.' She looks up to the constellation on the wall. 'If I'm right, then... this just might work...' She takes Echo's face and slowly pulls it down, while Echo looks a little lovestruck. Romy: "... there." She holds Echo's face in her paws, the sun shining and directing on her glasses, making the blush on her face glow. Romy blushes too, the eye contact making her shy. Romy: "Yeah. Just like that..." Romy then releases Echo's face and immediately turns back to the puzzle at hand, deep in thought. Echo meanwhile is seen holding her blushing face, surprised by her reaction to Romy's touch. Romy: 'Then from her, to me... where would I direct the path from there?' We see a map constructed by Romy's mind, where the position of each person, their birth constellations, and the light beams mirror the symbols/riddle on the stone tablet. Romy: 'Something like this... ?' Uncertainly, 'Gosh, I hope...' More confidently, "I mean - I KNOW this is right! It HAS to be!" Romy looks up at the Pisces constellation. "I'll stand here. And then..." Boone looks over from a couple feet away. "And then... what?" He must've moved because the light beam is barely brushing the side of his glasses. Romy instructs him to tilt his head a little. "Oh! Hah. Tilt your head like..." Boone mirrors Romy's tilt, glasses coming in contact with the light beam once more. "Like thi -"

Solving a riddle in a cave puzzle should be easier to do in a dreamworld, in retrospect. How much of that puzzle are you solving, and how much of it are you creating? You gotta make stuff up, at least a little bit.

Romy and Echo walk to a stone slab atop a few stone stairs. The shrine is shaped like a sun with two horns (like the Aries symbol) sticking up from the top. The slab says "Una flama, tres rioz". A flame symbol is inscribed with three river symbols surrounding it. Romy: "It's some kinda message. But just in symbols. And Spanish, maybe?" Echo steps in front of the slab and counts with her fingers. "Una. Tres. I don't know a ton of Spanish, but I think it's just coinciding with the symbols. One flame. Three... rivers?" She looks at Romy in a disoriented daze, while Romy looks at her in concern. Echo: "Heh. Not bad. I'd say that's fairly simple, as far as cave riddles go." Lester interjects, while Boone flips quickly through his Iowa Joan comic book. Les: "Riddles?! Well ain't that a buncha baloney!" Boone, hunched into his comic book: "I mean, it tracks. Most dungeons have puzzles before you reach the final boss. In 'Issue 19'..." Lester: "Oh, can it. Your comics are baloney too." Boone jabs him in the chest, looking very offended, "YOU TAKE THAT BACK!". Romy looks up at the hole in the ceiling from where they fell, up at the sun, "But a riddle? Here? Where we just broke through the ceiling?" She rubs her arm uncertainly, while the shadow of Janus's silhouette is seen ominously behind her. "How do we know someone's actually been down here before?" Boone clasps Romy's shoulder and waves his arm in the air, while a cloudy dreamy backdrop with rainbows and bubbles surround them. "Romy. Buddy. We are in the bowels of wonderous whimsical dreamland!" Echo slides in from the side of the page, "... presumably." Boone, excitedly, "RIGHT! Nothing here ever makes sense!" Echo, coolly, "No? It's means anything makes sense." Boone, irate, "That's what I mean! NON-sense!" Romy facepalms. "... I'm so confused." Echo consoles her. "Yeah - sorry. Boone's words can have that effect on people." Boone leans in with his ear perked. "Hold up. ME? MY words? You're the one who's always turning my words around. And making my sense make less sense!" Echo and Boone stand behind a spacey, starry background with their backs toward each other. Echo is palming herself on the forehead while Boone grumpily crosses his arms. The Scorpio constellation is seen behind Echo, the Aries constellation behind Boone. Echo: "Alright, whatever. Boone and I tend to disagree about the way things work here. But we do have one thing in common..." Echo gives a toothy grin, her glasses glistening. "CONFIDENCE." Echo is seen sitting on the cave floor with a half-lidded smile, as Boone leans his cheek against hers from over his shoulder, going "HMPH." Echo: "You gotta make sense of things your own way. Even if it doesn't make sense to anyone else." Romy nervously twiddles her fingers. "Y-you mean I'm supposed to... make things up?" Boone: "... when you put it that way..." They both look at Romy with a grin. Echo: "Yeah. Pretty much." Romy looks down sadly. "That's... easy for you guys. But I'm bad at lying. And I'm not confident at all..." Boone urges Romy gently, clasping his tummy in his hooves. "It's not lying, kid. It's followin' your gut. And stickin' to it!" He gestures with his head back to the stone slab with the riddle on it. "Take this riddle. Fire, rivers... don't see anything like that down here. Is there anything else in this cave you can see?" Romy turns her head back up. "Well, there's..." She looks up at the constellations on the walls, while Boone smiles from afar. "Stars." Echo holds a cup of coffee, standing against a flashback from Book 1 of Romy and herself standing underneath the starry night sky, Romy explaining something excitedly to Echo while Boone watches from his apartment deck with his pajamas on. This is in reference to the Book 1 scene where Romy enthusiastically imparts their love for astronomy on Echo. Echo: "Rather convenient for YOU, I'd say. Wasn't that a big interest of yours back home. Charting stars?"
