So, to me, it's not a choice between virtue signaling or being authentic... We should be compassionate towards people who aren't where we think they should be.

And being an Elon-esque jerkwad probably isn't being authentic so much as refusing to be..? Refusing to look at why they're acting out.

"Virtue signaling" is a disconnect between what we project and what we actually do, which is why people hate it.

imo the bridge between the performative self and the authentic is the process of shadow work: learning to understand & integrate our unwanted parts instead of repressing them.
