Hello old friend.

Epilogue of War and Peace Tolstoy goes full reactionary. The happy ending is Nicholas and Pierre becoming “good masters” to their serfs and Mary and Natasha become obedient wives and mothers. Natasha losses all of her beauty to boot so she is only attractive to her husband.

Us.

Human nature stays its course. The below passage from War and Peace could just as aptly describe the global (non)response to looming climate catastrophe.

It takes the energy equivalent of a human running a marathon for a whale to breach.

Reading War and Peace for the first time and it's much more of a historical narrative than I expected. Written roughly 60 years after Napoleon's doomed Russia campaign, it would be like a modern American writer covering the Vietnam War. Allows you to see Napoleon as a man vs. historical figure.

“When you lay in your bed at night and you hear the planes and you know exactly a few minutes later someone will be killed … you don’t know what to do with your thoughts and your feelings,” says Alex, referring to Israeli fighter jets and drones. “We live in a kind of mass depression and anxiety.”
