How Scary Are Ghost Forests?
To combat climate change, researchers argue that inundated forests could be turned into marshland carbon sinks.

Leaf Physiological Responses and Early Senescence Are Linked to Reflectance Spectra in Salt-Sensitive Coastal Tree Species
Salt-sensitive trees in coastal wetlands are dying as forests transition to marsh and open water at a rapid pace. Forested wetlands are experiencing repeated saltwater exposure due to the frequency an...

Despite the outcry, Duke University still plans to close its huge herbarium, because it doesn't want to spend $25 million to repair the collection's building.

Duke's endowment was $11.6 billion as of 2022; it is also the primary beneficiary (32%) of the independent $3.69 billion Duke Endowment.
One herbarium’s thorny future: Duke to close century-old 'gem' of biodiversity research
Duke’s collection of more than 800,000 specimens of fungi, plants and algae makes the herbarium one of the largest in the country. The move to close it has drawn criticism from faculty and researchers...

Just when I was certain @waterpotential.bsky.social couldn’t be any more of an inspiring badass, On The Swamp is published.

I can’t wait to finish this book - loving it!
ON THE SWAMP is here! Duke U is hosting a book launch in Durham on April 11 - free and open to the public. I’ll have a conversation about the book with @carbonshed.bsky.social followed by a reception and book signing. See link below for details and RSVP.

#UrbanWetlands are #BiodiversityHotspots that need to be protected & stewarded w/ thoughtful care. We must do better for the collective good. We need stricter protections for the voiceless who have little chance combating large land altering human machinery.
