Forest ecosystems are a critical pillar of Canada’s green future through sustainable land management and carbon sequestration. While the Boreal Forest and Boreal Plain ecozones have been studied extensively, there is still considerable uncertainty on how climate change-driven near-term warming will impact tree-growth and resilience. In the Canadian Prairies, native- and planted-trees present a unique opportunity to explore how boreal tree species may respond to near-term climate change south of their natural range in warmer, drier environments. However, these environments have, until recently, been critically under-studied and -valued. In this talk, I provide an overview of increasingly refined temporal and spatial scales demonstrating mapping of these forest ecosystems, tree-ring applications documenting growth limitations and resilience, and cellular-level applications identifying potential growth risks aimed at supporting sustainable land management.
