May 1796 – an English physician named Edward Jenner used Benjamin Jesty’s tested theory that exposure to cowpox can protect from smallpox. Dr. Jenner used the example of a milkmaid who had exposure to cowpox and used part of the sore to inoculate a child named James Phipps. James experienced a local reaction and some mild symptoms for several days but recovered well. A few months later James was inoculated with smallpox and did not develop smallpox, thus making him the first vaccinated human against smallpox.
Groundbreaking studies have since developed vaccines for over 20 different diseases. From measles to Ebola to tetanus and beyond – vaccines have aided in a 50% drop in childhood deaths over the last 30 years!

The history of the first procedural anesthetic is widely debated back to ancient history
The first public and publicized demonstration of anesthesia occurred on October 16th, 1846 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA. Anesthetist William Morton and surgeon John Warren used ether sedation to remove a lump from a patient’s jaw.
This demonstration had a massive impact on general medicine and forever changed the landscape of anesthesia and patient care for patients requiring surgery. Prior to this breakthrough, surgery was often seen as a last resort to save a patient’s life – a sort of risk versus benefit moment where speed was the only grace. The development and use of anesthesia advanced patient care to where it is today.
In the beginning, ether and chloroform were widely used, leading to over 40 different somewhat potentially toxic substances for anesthetic use. Less toxic agents were developed and used starting in the early 20th century. The development of IV anesthetics was developed in the 1930s.

In one of the Petri dishes there was a spot of mold that the colonies of bacteria were not present.
Fleming identified the mold as Penicillium notatum and recognized its potential ability to inhibit staphylococcus growth. He found that the mold ‘juice’ not only inhibited growth and killed off staphylococcus bacteria, but many others. Thus the antibiotics known as Penicillin was created. This heralded a new age in medicine- giving healthcare providers a way to treat otherwise deadly bacterial infections.
