We invite papers that (re)consider the relationship between gender and sexuality studies, feminist theory, and medieval discourses of Orientalism, colonialism, race, and intercultural encounter, engaging with some aspect of Dr. Kinoshita's extensive academic corpus.

In Honor of Sharon Kinoshita II: Postcolonial Feminisms
Dr. Kinoshita’s work draws a great deal from postcolonial studies and shapes how many medievalists today incorporate it in their research and teaching.

Topics might include reflections upon Medieval Boundaries' impact, case studies from that volume in light of the intervening decades, and/or depictions of cross-cultural contact in medieval literature more broadly.

An interesting question - perhaps our followers can help?

Friends in English and Feminist scholarship, I would love your help! What books/articles would you recommend on the ethics of scholars re-describing on the details of violence perpetrated against a character’s body? Or the visceral description of a character’s body against their (in story) will?

Close to TWO THOUSAND academics and educators say TRANS RIGHTS NOW.

(Sorry if you've seen this (and the historians' letter!) too many times. The lack of an algorithm means we have to keep reposting it to catch people, and this really matters.)

Heartened to see that close to 900 fellow academics and educators have already signed our letter in support of trans rights, trans wellbeing & trans inclusion, and against essentialist, anti-scientific, racialised & regressive views of womanhood. Please do read, share & sign! tinyurl.com/mud7va29

Delighted to share the beautiful cover for our volume, Towards An Accessible Academy: Perspectives from Disabled Medievalists, edited by Alexandra R. A. Lee, E. R. P. Champion, and me.

Coming soon from @mip-medpub.bsky.social for the Premodern Transgressive Literatures series ✨
A pink and purple background with an image of a medieval manuscript in the centre, containing an illustration of a closed castle. A woman at the top of the castle looks down at a man outside the castle. A modern additional image of a ramp has been placed at the doors of the castle, extending out of the medieval border of the illustration.

If you're looking for more premodern trans histories, check out Trans and Genderqueer Subjects in Medieval Hagiography

Front cover of Trans and Genderqueer Subjects in Medieval Hagiography. Collage of medieval manuscript elements with modern queer imagery, include saint waving trans flag Trans and Genderqueer Subjects in Medieval Hagiography presents an interdisciplinary examination of trans and genderqueer subjects in medieval hagiography. Scholarship has productively combined analysis of medieval literary texts with modern queer theory – yet, too often, questions of gender are explored almost exclusively through a prism of sexuality, rather than gender identity. This volume moves beyond such limitations, foregrounding the richness of hagiography as a genre integrally resistant to limiting binaristic categories, including rigid gender binaries. The collection showcases scholarship by emerging trans and genderqueer authors, as well as the work of established researchers. Working at the vanguard of historical trans studies, these scholars demonstrate the vital and vitally political nature of their work as medievalists. Trans and Genderqueer Subjects in Medieval Hagiography enables the re-creation of a lineage linking modern trans and genderqueer individuals to their medieval ancestors, providing models of queer identity where much scholarship has insisted there were none, and re-establishing the place of non-normative gender in history.
