Imagine a really flat slug wearing plate armor; that's basically what these guys look like. All the other mollusks downsized on their shell pieces but the chitons said "nah I think 8 pieces are still in fashion"

It may not have wings, but you're currently looking at a moth! Specifically, an adult female Mottled Umber (Erannis defoliaria). Adult male Mottled Umbers have full wings.

It may not have wings, but you're currently looking at a moth! Specifically, an adult female Mottled Umber (Erannis defoliaria). Adult male Mottled Umbers have full wings.

Spent #FossilFriday tweaking my Anchiornis colour reconstruction. The black+white+red intepretation does entirely match the melanosome data recorded for this species, as there's evidence of phaeomelanin (= rufous hues) on the arm, and lots of grey across the body. #paleoart #sciart #paleontology
