Celebrating a major milestone: Alberta Innovates and NSERC have granted me $300K to support my research on fairness and bias testing in AI! This will fund 3 new SE-All Lab members and broaden outreach efforts beyond academia. I’m now hiring a postdoc and a PhD student—anyone out there interested?

Just got another review asking about generalization in a grounded theory paper. Dear reviewers, please remember: every time you ask for generalizability in qualitative research, a puppy starts crying. Let’s not do that.

Just finished reviewing the 7 papers I got from the EASE 2025 (International Conference on Evaluation and Assessment in Software Engineering). Great stuff! Good luck to all the authors, and I hope to see some of these ideas out in the world soon!

Don’t just say DEI as if it’s a bad word. Spell it out.

Say diversity, which is the lifeblood of American society & culture & innovation.

Say equity, which a just society should pursue.

Say inclusion, because decent people believe in increasing belonging, not isolating people who are different.

I am excited to attend IEEE SANER for the first time! Our paper was accepted for the Reproducibility Studies Track. In this work, we replicated our CHASE 2023 study on how software engineering students’ familiarity with distinguished scientists from the field may influence their career choices.

ESEM was the first international conference where I published, and for a decade now, I have studied and used the guidelines for empirical software engineering developed by the ISERN community. In a way, ISERN was my first academic community, and today I am honored and happy to join them as a member!

After having my grounded theory papers rejected—surprise, surprise—due to 'lack of' statistical generalization (which was addressed in the threats to validity section along with data saturation and transferability), I thought, why not share a few more insightful review comments I've received today?

Of course, we wouldn't miss the chance to discuss EDI in education during @icseconf.bsky.social! So, we are also happy to share that our paper has been accepted to the IEEE Conference on Software Engineering Education and Training.

I woke up to reviewers asking about statistical generalization ... in our QUALITATIVE research or, more importantly, discussing how my abstract is too long. But hey, 2 out of 5 papers were accepted at @ICSEconf-SEIS, so I am celebrating with my amazing collaborators! Cheers!

First time in Sweden, visiting Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg! Francisco Gomes invited us to discuss research collaborations on EDI in Software Engineering. @aserebrenik.bsky.social is also here, so you know some exciting studies are in the works!
