🆕News: On Dec. 16, the Soka Gakkai hosted an online event as part of the annual HAPIC conference on discussing ideas on tackling global issues, organized by the Japan NGO Center for International Cooperation. The event featured presentations by Takashi Koike, Associate Professor of Setsunan University; Yasuharu Yokoyama of the Japan Civil Society Network on SDGs; Moe Watanabe, a representative of the Tokyo-based community organization Engawa Kazoku, which works to connect multiple generations; and Kiyoshi Akasu of the SGI. The speakers shared initiatives addressing local community challenges related to the SDGs and aging societies. At the opening session on the 8th, a short film created by the SGI was screened, and Harumi Endo, Program Coordinator for Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs of the SGI, delivered a report. Later that day, the SGI also co-organized an event titled “From Early Warning to Early Action: Localizing Anticipatory Action in Indonesia and Japan,” during which Nobuyuki Asai, Director for Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs of the SGI, gave a presentation. 🆕News: On Dec. 16, an online discussion was held to review the progress of the Al-Musiqa Tajm’ana (Music Brings Us Together) music education program in Jordan, run by Musicians Without Borders (MWB) and supported by the Soka Gakkai. The discussion linked participants from multiple countries, including Japan and the Netherlands. The program involves training music teachers and aims to strengthen resilience, connection, and a sense of belonging among vulnerable and underserved children and youth, many of whom are refugees, through the power of music. The event was hosted by the Qazaq Nuclear Frontline Coalition (QNFC) and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Kazakhstan. Conducted between January and August 2025, the survey was carried out in five countries affected by nuclear weapons use and testing—Australia, Japan, Kazakhstan, the Marshall Islands, and the United States. The SGI co-organized the survey together with four other organizations, including QNFC and FES Kazakhstan. 🆕News: On Dec. 14, the 8th Youth Forum commemorating Human Rights Day (Dec. 10) was held at the Josei Toda International Center in Tokyo. The forum focused on the death penalty and was co-organized by Amnesty International Japan and the Soka Gakkai Peace Committee with the support of the United Nations Information Centre in Tokyo. Kaoru Nemoto, Director of UNIC Tokyo, explained that the death penalty is inconsistent with human dignity and the right to life, and Mario Marazziti, Co-Founder of the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty, shared a video message. A panel discussion followed, bringing together representatives of organizations and individuals working to promote abolition of the death penalty in Japan, including a former prison officer, a lawyer and a member of the House of Councillors. Over 3 days, more than 100 participants from diverse secular and religious backgrounds exchanged perspectives on promoting social cohesion and climate justice in Europe. On Nov. 12, Lucy Plummer of the SGI Office for UN Affairs spoke on a panel discussion on the hidden costs of inequality.
