Village Vignettes

I love photographing the little signs around our village. Businesses change, but these small details anchor a moment in time. This chalkboard, with its cheerful chef and daily specials … felt like a snapshot of everyday Fort Langley life.

HP5 and the Leica 0 in Fort Langley

People have been asking me to share some photos taken with the Leica 0. This photo of baskets on the sidewalk here in Fort Langley Village was shot with that camera on Ilford HP5 film.

Fog hung low along the river Saturday morning, softening the vineyard into quiet rows fading into mist. I took the shot for the atmosphere — didn’t notice the owl until I was back in the studio. Perched on a post, watching for breakfast. See if you can spot it.

A Glimpse Into Barnack’s Bench

Ever wondered what Oskar Barnack’s actual workspace looked like — the place where the Leica story truly began? I dug into the archives and uncovered some fascinating details about the man, his tools, and the quiet workshop where 35mm photography was born.

When the Coffee Angels Sang

I didn’t care for coffee most of my life. It was always instant or staff room sludge, the kind that could strip paint by noon.

Then, in my late 40s, a friend pressured me into trying a proper latte at a real coffee shop. I gave in. The coffee angels sang.

Leica 0: Zero Automation, Zero Mercy

This Christmas I was gifted this gorgeous Leica 0 — the camera from which all modern 35mm cameras descend. Its century‑old technology still makes images that look surprisingly contemporary. The real difference isn’t the photos, it’s the process.

New Year’s Day, Bedford Channel

On New Year’s Day, my wife and I wandered across the Jacob Haldi Bridge in Fort Langley, coffees in hand.

Still Moving Forward

It is a cold January morning when I spot a lone kayaker working his way up Bedford Channel. The wind bites and the water is cold enough to freeze your thoughts, yet he moves with the steady rhythm of someone who has been doing this for decades.

Where Modern Photography Began

In 1923, the Leica 0‑Series quietly changed photography. Oskar Barnack, an engineer at Ernst Leitz, built a compact camera using 35mm motion‑picture film run horizontally to make a 24×36mm negative — the format still used today.

I spent the afternoon at the Canadian Museum of Flight in Langley with a couple of friends, and this aircraft stopped me cold. Many of you know I love restoring vintage cameras, and as a pilot I am just as drawn to the restoration of old aircraft.

Portrait of a Farm Yard Veteran

Tucked along a quiet rural road outside Fort Langley, this old tractor caught my eye. The farmland and vineyards out here are full of character, but this machine had a charm all its own.

Stories in Grain and Light

I can still remember the magic of Saturday matinees as a kid—25 cents for the movie, 15 cents for a drink and snack. Growing up in a small Ontario town, the excitement of heading downtown to the theatre was unforgettable.

A Hasselblad Whisper in the Wilderness

Pitt Lake and the Pitt Addington Marsh remain one of my favourite places to wander. Quiet and peaceful, they sit cradled by the magnificent Coast Mountains. This valley is almost entirely untouched wilderness, minutes from home, yet it feels worlds away.

Little Gifts in the Gloom

I love photographing mushrooms. Just when the west coast settles into the gloom and rain of fall, these little gifts push through the forest floor.

Restoring a Moment in Telephone History

By the mid‑1940s, operator‑assisted calls were giving way to automated dial service. This candlestick, stamped September 1945, sat silent for decades—its dial frozen, wiring buried under nicotine.

My Happy Place

Analogue photography offers a uniquely satisfying, hands-on experience. Unlike the instant nature of digital, it demands intention, loading film, setting exposure, and developing in the darkroom.

A Window from Time

I’m always stopping to photograph old windows and doors. The details and imperfections are what make them beautiful. The rough, hand-hewn wood frame adds texture and warmth, while the wavy glass dates back to a time when molten glass was poured by hand.
