Firefighter. Fella. Sometimes technie (for that sweet, sweet techie money). Thought I was deeply cynical, but it turns out that I was an optimist. For external use only. Apply directly to forehead
Idle thought: If the good guys win this one, I'm looking forward to DHS becoming the new standard movie bad guys (replacing Nazis, Soviets, ...), where a wise-cracking hero leaves a trail of bodies in 'DHS' armor behind him/her/them that the audience already knows were evil henchmen.

You know the 7-11 guys love you when they're like "yeah, this product you would have consumed with tremendous enjoyment has been out for too long, let us get you a fresh one".

I kinda wonder how many people (a) have shares of WB-Discovery and (b) also get stuff from their broker on paper. (Ellison et al blasted out an offer to buy outstanding shares on December 19th, and since the brokerages need time to process any response, they're going to want replies by tomorrow.)

New year, new mistakes.

Seriously, people, if you're still making the same mistakes, there's nothing I can do for you.

Firefighter Dave reminds everyone that designated drivers are awesome and cabs/Ubers/etc are just paid DDs. I'm sure you're all wonderful people, but I don't want to meet any of you tonight.

So I had a thought.

Seriously, it was like right here a minute ago. Has anyone seen it?

Be the problem you want to see in the world!

You know you're crashing in a boomer's guest room when the nightstand has a wired phone, a clock-radio, a flashlight, a TV remote, and a lamp, but no space for a phone and no power jack for a charger.

A joyous festival of the kosher Chinese food to all those who celebrate!

You know too many white people found your favorite Korean place when the menu starts including (English-language-only) warnings about "Spicy!", a chunk of kimchi the size of a postage stamp shows up before the meal, and the waitstaff sees it gobbled and needs to ask "would you like more?".

It's not the years catching up with me so much as feeling like they rear-ended me.

Firefighter Dave reminds folks: COVID is still a thing, and a quick test before you head out for holiday festivities, especially ones involving old folks (even vaccinated old folks), is probably a good idea.

Gonna point out that the last time we Made America Great, it involved putting a U-Boat captain who decided to murder the survivors of a ship he had sank in front of a firing squad.

Not saying there are any possible modern parallels [because doing so would get my account suspended].

You know you're officially an Old when you remember Black Friday fights, trampling, and related stupidity.

(I'm not saying those were the Good Old Days. I am completely ok with not responding to Walmart at 06:01 on Friday for a stabbing.)

Firefighter Dave's annual reminder: If you're going to deep-fry your turkey over a propane burner, please put the burner outside and not under an overhanging roof or deck. If the oil catches fire, turn off the gas, cover, and wait for a bit (though keep your turkey timer ticking).

I'm supporting Starbucks striking workers by not crossing the picket line. *

* The fact I'd have to go a fair bit out of my way to get an overpriced cup of overroasted coffee is irrelevant.

heads up to anyone who holds trans kids near: amy harmon from the nyt is searching for and having a hard time finding people to interview to find out exactly what trans kids are doing when their care is limited or cut off, and for purposes of community safety, please shut the fuck up around her.

I can't wait to see how the Washington Post tries to spin today's elections as a resounding Republican victory on tomorrow's front page.

Because we're in that time of the year, a reminder: People are not handing out drugs to random trick-or-treating children. Drugs are expensive, kids on drugs attract a _lot_ of attention, and it's not like trick-or-treaters have the money to support that bad habit if they get hooked.

Because I keep seeing people posting "I'm an architect/general contractor and $300M is way too much for the Epstein Ballroom"... Under the old rules, yes. We're now a kleptocracy; assume a third is skimmed off the top and that contractors are padding billing because final bills won't get paid.

I can't wait to see what random nonsense mainstream media decides to cover in their Sunday edition.

Firefighter Dave sez: If you can attend a 'No Kings' rally this weekend, by all means, try to do so. If s**t goes sideways, GTFO. Have a buddy, have a meeting place (well) outside the rally area. If someone is acting weird, or just giving you bad vibes, stay far away from them. Be safe out there.

Did a public education event today. We have a short section of subway track on site for training (not connected to the actual subway), and as a comment on the importance of paying attention to your environment, I left a (plastic) training dummy bridging the second and (dead) third rail.

I would like to thank everyone who nominated me for Fat Bear 2025, and congratulate Chuck, who won, fair and square, despite his diet of fresh salmon being far lower in fat than my diet of "whatever looks good at WaWa".

Me: I'm thinking our Electronic Overlords are getting way too much access to my personal life.

Also me: Hey, if I print 30mm risers for my couch legs, the robotic vacuum can just cruise right under my couch instead of slamming it's face into it repeatedly!
