I started out writing a book about Mongolian music, but ended up with a bigger question: what do you do with a world that is falling apart? For the musicians and herders I worked with, the answer is in the songs. A Song for the Horses out this October:

Tidal keeps autoplaylisting to them no matter what I started with lately. Some kind of special operation to normalize this band going on

There aren't any wrong reasons to follow a certain baseball team. I usually root for the team that has games I can go to or watch on local tv, so I rooted for the A's when I lived in the Bay and I root for the Guardians now. But I have a friend who is a fan of the Orioles because he likes the bird

The fact that "make the miners code" was doomed because AI would nuke all of the coding jobs a scant 8 years later is almost not even worth mentioning given the context that the electricity demands of both the coding jobs and ai meant that both only served to entrench Old King Coal further anyway

Shockingly hard to find any writing that is remotely critical of the "Silicon Holler," despite the fact that I don't know a single rural southern Appalachian person who thought of it as anything other than a scam that, at best, you might could get on the pump side of for a couple months

Sort of millennial luck that my book came out right as the social media apparatus fell apart, but anyway what this means is you just have to go back to makin wordy jokes to your real life friends

I think what would make mastodon work is people being on there, basically, but honestly in a bigger sense I think microblogging is over. We have a twitter government now, social media has fully metathesized into... That

Despite the best efforts of its users, at its bones this is a "moved from PNW to Asheville, learned some new slurs for hillbillies, then moved to Colorado to open a brewpub guy" website

I got my preorder copy and am already enchanted by this book, really fascinating even (perhaps especially) if, like me, you don’t really know anything about Mongolian music

It's a delicate game, only way to win for sure is to go for something that is silly on purpose, like "whip-crack went his thwumpy tail"

The less like country your genre is, the better actually

Actually the key is to add a little steel guitar to your song, regardless of genre

I think the key to good songwriting is to invent a new word in the song but use it in a way that everyone just kind of feels like they've heard it before. Like "surry down." Makes you think "sure, that's how you go to a stoned soul picnic, you surry down to it. Like how Grandma used to say"

Now I often think of myself as surrying somewhere. Even to places where there won't be sassafras and moonshine, like work or the hardware store
