That’s a sensible thing to look into - but if the rules really don’t allow it surely the Council could make a one off grant? Appeal to the community? Recyke y Bike sell children’s bikes really cheaply. We know it can be done (because Bike for Health used to do it for their schools programmes).

We agree re the LTNs - if the soon to be Lord Forbes’ 2020 climate change plan had been acted on children would by now be able to cycle freely throughout the city. That was a massive opportunity to improve children’s physical and mental health in the city squandered.

5/ So to end re Bikeability the city has funding for a physical activity programme that kids would enjoy & benefit from but lots of the money isn’t being claimed. It looks like poorer kids are missing out but we can’t be certain as the council’s records aren’t fit for analysis. That’s worrying.

4/ As well as the social justice point the city’s most prestigious has well documented problems with childhood obesity and child mental health services have very long waiting lists. Physical activity programmes like Bikeability don’t solve this, but they are beneficial…

3/ We can surmise from members’ experience that one potential reason is that kids need a bike to take part. We also know that this is something that can be mitigated eg via a bike fleet (like Bike for Health used to use) or by social prescribing of bicycles…

2/ The city’s most prestigious private school is taking this offer up fully (& good for them) yet schools in less affluent areas aren’t. We can’t analyse the reason for this as council officers aren’t keeping electronic records and the paper ones they are keeping don’t allow this analysis…
January 8, 2026 at 8:38 AM
1/ There are 2 aspects to Bikeability (1) transport & (2) education. Re transport we agree that safer streets are needed for children to be able to use bicycles. Re education though, this is an enrichment opportunity (ie equivalent to a school trip) that is funded (ie free)…

V interesting article on Bikeability.

Questions for @junasathian.bsky.social & @mikecookson.bsky.social:
1. Do children still need their own bikes? This might explain why RGS has higher take up than Elswick?
2. Why are council officers using paper records rather than spreadsheets?

Another great video by BerniciaP (is he on here??) about the past life & potential future of Manors as a transport hub:

And I completely agree:

My (unqualified) thoughts should Manors mainline be redeveloped in future for improved service & accessibility, and presumably increased line capacity too.

Two straight (4-car) platforms beneath/south of Argle St, with long disability-compliant ramps up to the over-bridge. (1/2)

This sounds very interesting - do you know if Newcastle Council have / are considering this re the local road lighting policy? @junasathian.bsky.social @mikecookson.bsky.social

3/That said it would be welcome investment & it’s great parks have been discussed in Parliament (if shocking they were ignored for 8 years). They are so important in a city like our where many live in flats or only have small backyards.
November 22, 2025 at 12:26 PM
2/It’s a problem that Council Officers can just ignore these very real issues as they really affect what children can do & there are genuine public health reasons to consider this given the well-documented issues with childhood obesity & mental health issues.

1/The assessment for SGosGreen was interesting re kids travel, as it specifically said the mitigation for losing the green space was that PaddyFreemansPark was close. No consideration of whether a kid would be allowed to walk that far (& cross the notorious HaddricksMill roundabouts) unaccompanied.

I FOI'd English councils whether they use legal land purchase powers to create traffic-free paths. Just 1% said they have successfully.

Why is something that's so common for roads almost never done for cycle routes? And what does it mean for cycling?

We recently wrote to Newcastle City Council about the impending resurfacing of the busy Fenham Hall Drive/Wingrove Road junction, asking if there will be any improvements for walking and cycling as part of the resurfacing works. It's important to keep making these points!

Excellent news!
Really productive and informative meeting with Officers this morning about Manors Station. Looking forward to the first phase of the improvements to the station, and hopefully that, and adjacent developments will start to unlock the potential there.
