A Little Owl (mochuelo in Spain, mussol in Catalan) kindly sent by Lucy Brzoska. It had flown down to inspect these items left by gardeners working in the Fossar de la Pedrera, Montjuïc, the mass grave of the victims of the Franco regime in Barcelona. Like a surrealist painting.

The River Ebro flowing fast near Mora d'Ebre. They crossed it on a moonless night in July 1938, seeming a great victory, become a terrible defeat. Later they sang to it in union halls in Glasgow, exile cafes in Caracas and Toulouse, secretly at night in camp huts in Austria in Europe's dark heart.

Bubble gum war card from USA, 1938, testifying italian bombing of La Rambla 19 August 1938, 20 killed. The series was called "To know the horrors of war is to want peace". They were collected by US kids including a dozen related to the SCW(also featured Japan invasion of China, Korea, Ethiopia,USSR)

Years ago was driving with Spanish friends Madrid-Almería in August across La Mancha. Was v. hot + aircon didn't work. We stopped sweaty at a little place + gratefully all ordered nice cool gazpacho manchego. Dismayed to learn gazpacho manchego is hot heavy stew of rabbit+whatnot. Delish though

Some time ago on the tour. Anne, a woman from Copenhagen telling the group the story of her International Brigader great uncle, the famous Danish poet Gustaf Munch-Petersen, killed in Aragón in April 1938. Another great uncle, a founder of Danish Communist Party, murdered by the NKVD, Moscow in 1940

The last paragraph in the narrative section of Orwell's Homage to Catalonia. So powerful, brilliant and prophetic, ending with "... all sleeping the deep, deep sleep of England, from which I sometimes fear that we shall never wake till we are jerked out of it by the roar of bombs."

Mural homage to Irish International Brigader Bob Doyle, Dublin. Since painted over, but now plaque nearby Doyle was captured during Aragón offensive+spent hellish 11 months in San Pedro de Cardeña concentration camp before being released. I recommend his autobiography Brigadista

Another item from the Walking Museum of the Spanish Civil War. 5-cent Barcelona bus ticket from successfully collectivised bus services of anarchist CNT trade union. Public transport was collectivised until the city fell in January 1939. Coincidence surely, but today's buses are black and red
