Ya I think either a UBI or a government work program is inevitable - that or a very big war... But first we will probably have another economic recession or depression to motivate such changes.

I dont think the answer is universal 100 percent employment with all surplus labour occupied by the machinery of capital - whether that machinery is owned by a corporation or the state, or a collective. People should be free to work as they please within reason. Some jobs have additional obligations

Lenin has a paper i read years ago about how labour must be efficiently used and surplus labour cant just be occupying space unproductivly because it would be the slow death of the economy. If a machine replaces the worker they dont keep working for that organization in any economic system.
