I think the short jokes are pretty tedious EXCEPT from Rean because Rean never gets to tease anyone in that playful way 🥰 and I think the Smiling Anger thing she does is also pretty corny. Like Oh Normally she’s So Small But Now She’s Scary WhOaAaA just doesn’t hit for me

Really though I love her happiness and optimism in the face of repeated tragedy — and how threadbare it can feel sometimes :] it’s inspiring but there’s a hidden desperation and despair to it that makes it devastating at the same time in a way that I love ^_^

*what’s the point* is definitely a core aspect of it to me as well!! Like I’ve got Quite Enough negative shit in my life and so do others, I don’t see the point in trying to paint myself as Superior because stuff Other People Like is Bad, Actually.

Yourself, to feel like you Do have control in a world that feels more and more Out Of Control. And it’s easier to do so on social media because it’s easier to dehumanize people when you dont have to talk to them in person!

I also 1000% agree with your assessment of the Mega Toxic ppl — I see it also in a greater context of despair, like as things get more bleak and authoritarian in the US, people who fear such things will take on inconsequential “opponents,” because it feels good to have a Win, something to reassure -

Seen as Glazers or Haters and end up sort of self-selecting towards those extremes as well, as Very Positive or Very Negative takes are what are more likely to get the most engagement even if they are reductive of a persons actual feelings.

Omg yes yes yes to everything here Avery! There’s a nuanced middle ground to between Uncritical Glazing and Closed-Minded Hatred but social media really lends itself to A: communicating in extreme hyperbole and B: bad-faith readings of what other people say, so I think people get unfairly —

I’d separated it from her character entirely — sometimes it feels like there’s a Stupid Horny Dudebro writing team and an Emotionally intelligent Fujo writing team and anything I see from the first team I tend to disregard for Characters

So many different people in so many different ways *because* of how BIG and unfocused it is. And while I think that that is a reason why the fanbase can be so fractious at times, I also think it’s beautiful. Trails is enthusiastic and creative, and it feels like it loves all of humanity.

It always leaves room for interpretation, doesn’t dive too deeply into lore or physics or politics or any of the more concrete aspects of a world. It is Art in such a fundamental and unapologetic way, and I love how it connects with —

Trails tries to do so Many Things, mechanically and narratively. It’s a huge world with a grand, sweeping narrative, and also zooms down to such a granular level of character work. It’s got love, laughter, tragedy, morality, mental health, international conflict, empathy— and so rarely does it -

I think toxic positivity is real, but I also think it’s way overestimated by people who associate Criticism with Superiority. But to me that’s just an expression of like, fear of vulnerability. We’re afraid of putting ourselves out there and being mocked for it, because we see it all the time! —
