Nearly 24 hours after a notice went out about Gov. Bob Ferguson going out of state for two weeks, we finally got a (vague) explanation about his plans.

Where is Gov. Bob Ferguson until Oct.9? Unclear yet because the press release sent out by his office at 6:41pm last night doesn’t say 🤔

Four current state employees, who requested anonymity because they feared workplace retaliation, told me they were instructed to put things into instant messaging platforms such as Teams and Slack specifically to avoid public disclosure laws.

New from me: WA governor suspends policy that allowed public records to be destroyed for years, despite warnings and concerns about the policy since it was implemented in 2021. Taxpayers will now pay out $225k for the destruction of records by DCYF.

NEW: In a departure for WA governors, Bob Ferguson is avoiding regular news conferences. David Ammons, the retired longtime AP correspondent who covered 7 governors, called Ferguson's early stance "disappointing and counterproductive" (w. @ssowersby.bsky.social) www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...

Washington state collects approximately $700,000 every month in federal benefits intended for about 750 eligible foster children, to fund the agency overseeing their care. Is this the year WA changes this policy? New from me:

Push to end WA's seizure of foster youth benefits faces multibillion dollar hurdle
Washington's child welfare agency is on board with ending the practice of diverting federal benefits. But a multibillion dollar hurdle may stand in the way.

NEW: WA Gov.-elect Bob Ferguson comes out against the 'wealth tax' floated by outgoing Gov. Jay Inslee. Ferguson is calling for spending cuts in the face of a shortfall, but would boost K-12 & fund free school lunches (w. @ssowersby.bsky.social) www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news...

Hello Bluesky! For my first post here I’m happy to announce that I will be moving to The Seattle Times as the new state government reporter. I’m sad to leave my position at Cascade PBS but I am excited for this new opportunity!
