"Army of Belchness", my entry for the 2006 @starmen.net Halloween Funfest, turns 19 this year. I can't help but smile and think of those times whenever I see it 🥲

This was no one's preferred outcome, but the overwhelming deluge of bots slowed our server response times to a crawl; just posting a single comment could take upwards of 1.5 minutes, and that's if our web servers didn't overload and prevent a user from reading a discussion thread entirely...

In order to keep the site at least somewhat stable, we have had to take drastic measures to protect our forum from these bots.

Unfortunately we have been forced to restrict forum access to members-only.

Here is an example of what you will see if you try to access a thread without an account:

Hey sm.netters, we'd like to announce some recent changes we have made to our discussion forum:

Recently, overwhelming numbers of AI bots & web scrapers have been rendering our forum practically unusable for days at a time; DDOS'ing us in slow motion as they vacuum up 20+ years of posting history..
