Veteran Cinematographer John Alonzo with William Shatner on the set of STAR TREK GENERATIONS. With films like CHINATOWN and SCARFACE in his filmography, Alonzo took first time film director David Carson under his wing, according to Producer Rick Berman: "Alonzo pretty much took David under his wing and said, 'Look, you’re the director, you can do whatever the hell you want to do.' And David took that to heart. If David had fourteen setups for a certain day and he would get seven of them done, his attitude was, 'Too bad. I’m going at the pace that I want to go.' And the studio started going ape-shit."

On being cast as the captain of the Enterprise-B, Ruck recalled, "So my manager at the time calls up—and this is in the days of faxes—and says, 'I’m faxing you over some pages for a Star Trek movie.' I say, 'Okay, great.' And the pages come over, and I read them, and in my mind I’m going to be playing an alien with a head shaped like a stalk of broccoli or something. So I go, 'Who do they want me to play?' 'Harriman!' Look, when I shave every day, I don’t look in the mirror and say, 'Hey! There’s a starship commander.' It’s just not how I picture myself. So I was, like, 'Really?' 'Yeah, that’s what they want.'"

USS Enterprise-B bridge, STAR TREK GENERATIONS (1994)
USS Enterprise-B bridge looking forward from the Captain's chair to the view screen. The Enterprise-B bridge set was created under the supervision of veteran TREK Production Designer Herman Zimmerman, a redress of the Enterprise-A bridge set Zimmerman had designed for STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER. The set was repurposed within GENERATIONS, serving as the primary interior of the Amargosa Observatory.

Walter Koenig as Commander Pavel Chekov, William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk, and James Doohan as Captain Montgomery Scott as guests of honor at the maiden voyage of the Enterprise-B. Early versions of the script for STAR TREK GENERATIONS, penned by TNG writers Brannon Braga and Ronald D. Moore, featured Kirk boarding the Enterprise-B with McCoy and Spock. However, both DeForest Kelley and Leonard Nimoy (who was also offered the opportunity to direct the film) declined offers to reprise their roles. According to Moore in 2008, "Leonard turned down the script, turned down the director’s chair on the film and I knew he didn’t like the script. It is hard to say at this point he was wrong."

Mitchell discussed his transformation into Kol through the character's distinct look: "The costume is heavy and it's hot and the prosthetics are heavy and hot, but I've always been an actor that works from the inside out and the outside in. These costumes and prosthetics, when you put them on, they're like layers of your character, and the more you put on the more you start feeling like your character. Then you add in the language, this very visceral and guttural language, and it just lends itself so much to my character, being a kind of aggressive Klingon. I find the language itself is a little bit aggressive and I’ve found when I am speaking it, I kind of start moving my body a bit and using my arms and moving my neck a bit. All these layers added on to helping me create my character."

According to the installment of AFTER TREK immediately following "Into the Forest I Go", writers Erika Lippoldt and Bo Yeon Kim toyed with making the number of Stamets' jumps be 525,600, a reference to "Seasons of Love" from RENT (for which Rapp famously originated the character of Mark Cohen). The writers, however, ultimately settled on 133 jumps, a reference to the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA episode "33".

We don't want her dead!' So, that's great. It's fun to play with ideas of what might happen."
