Michelle Yeoh is a big inspiration. So I feel honored to be serving alongside her, because she has been such a big part of the movie-watching experience from woman’s perspective. She has been kicking ass for years. And she is such a picture of grace and humility so I’ve learned a lot from her immediately because we were working together. Day by day we are working together so I get to learn so much from her."

USS Shenzhou brig, STAR TREK: DISCOVERY (2017)

Like many of the Shenzhou / Discovery interiors, the brig was designed under supervision of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY's first production designer, Mark Worthington, to be reconfigured to serve as multiple locations on multiple starships. Following the set's use in "Battle at the Binary Stars", the set was reworked to serve as Captain Lorca's "menagerie" beginning in "Context is for Kings". It would later go back to being a brig (albeit with a different configuration from the Shenzhou brig) aboard the Discovery and even stood in for Spock's quarters aboard the USS Enterprise in DISCOVERY's second season.

Because there is this dichotomy of Vulcan indoctrination versus human emotion and human DNA, versus Starfleet ideology. And so, it's really about all of these things, all of these tenets of my being, and how they are relating to each other, and how they're opposing each other, right? So, I was born into a human family, and a human life, and then was sort of forced into Vulcan culture. So, there's the acculturation that has happened, and there was certainly the assimilation that I fought to achieve."

James Frain and Prosthetics Supervisor James Mackinnon on the set of "The Vulcan Hello". In 2017, Frain spoke to Trekcore about taking over the role of Sarek from Mark Lenard: "Well, I feel a great sense of responsibility to Mark Lenard’s performance because he was the first to establish the character, and did such a fantastic job. So, I had him very much in mind but I also felt like, we change so much in our lives. [Mark Lenard’s performance is] where he ends up, but he’s lived for 200 years. So who was he 50 years, or 100 years before that? Like, who is this guy who marries a human being, when humans have an emotional culture, and Vulcans believe that emotion causes war? It simply has to be repressed, because it’s dangerous, yet here he is, playing with danger – that seems to me to be kind of exciting… and kinda sexy, dare I say it!"

Created under the supervision of DISCOVERY's first production designer, Mark Worthington, the Shenzhou interiors were designed to ultimately serve as interiors of the USS Discovery and other Federation vessels. The Shenzhou transporter room would be modified by removing the central console and "lateral vector transporter" dishes as well as swapping red lighting for blue lighting in order to serve as the same room aboard the USS Discovery. Following STAR TREK: DISCOVERY's jump forward in time to the 32nd century which utilized personal transporters, the transporter room set would be transformed into Discovery's crew lounge for Seasons 4 and 5.
