Deeply saddened to hear that Jimmy Cliff has died at the age of 81.
A truly magnificent singer and performer. He started out as a teenager in the early 60s recording future classics like this...

The next gassing-execution date hasn’t been set. Yet.

I remember when things were simpler to discuss—though no less horrifying—before this evening and Alabama’s 7th nitrogen-gassing-torture (and the nation’s 8th). In January 2024, after Alabama’s first execution by nitrogen-gassing, I published “Alabama torture outrage muted and unconscionably insufficient.” Alabama has since gas-tortured 5 more men. FYI Today the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit refused to stay Alabama’s 7th nitrogen-gassing-execution torture on 10/23, affirming a federal district court’s decision that 2 to 7 minutes of conscious suffocation would not establish an 8th Amendment violation.

October 10, 2025, the global community marks the 23rd World Day Against the Death Penalty. Even if you believe in the #deathpenalty, while I’d urge you to reconsider, I hope you can at least agree gassing human beings to death is wrong. This weekend, I’ll publish another essay—in Alabama—about this.
In 15 days, Alabama will torture a 7th man to death with nitrogen gas. Weird how the social media outrage hasn’t extended to repetitively torturing people with nitrogen gas.

🔊 Last Thursday, Alabama savagely gas-tortured a sixth man to death. On October 23rd, three weeks from today, Alabama has a seventh gassing. Weird how more attention isn’t being paid to that. In June, I called it, the gassings, “the descent of mankind.”
