On this day in 1822, Colonel Benjamin Stephenson died. A common mourning symbol of the time was the weeping willow. Both Europeans and Americans in the 19th century were fascinated by ancient Greek myths and styles. In Antiquity willows were associated with the queen of the Underworld, Persephone.

On this day in 1822 Jean-François Champollion announced that he had deciphered the Rosetta Stone. The stone features a royal decree written in three forms---ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, Demotic, and ancient Greek. By studying hieroglyphs denoting names, he was able to translate the hieroglyphs.
