To Senators @durbin.senate.gov & @duckworth.senate.gov - Refuse to vote for any appropriations bill for DHS that fails to rein in ICE & CBP and protect our communities! Indivisible Chicago joins Indivisible IL, Indivisible Evanston, Soy City Indivisible, Capital City IL Indivisible in this letter:
Page 1 of letter to IL senators which says: We are writing to you on behalf of the members of Indivisible Illinois, Indivisible Chicago Alliance, Indivisible Evanston, Soy City Indivisible and Capital City Illinois Indivisible representing over 80,000 members who are your constituents. We urge you to refuse to vote for any appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security that fails meaningfully to rein in ICE and Border Patrol and protect our communities. We ask that you are public in your opposition in funding and provide leadership with others in the Senate. We also ask for a meeting to discuss this with you either in your Chicago or Springfield offices ideally on January 21, 22, or 23. To date, our requests for a meeting have gone unanswered. Our communities are under attack by our own government. Federal agents, paid by our tax dollars, are detaining, handcuffing, beating and now murdering people with no due process and with no regard for basic civil and human rights. We need you to speak up and fight for your constituents and we need you to do it now. As a member of Congress, you have the power to limit the administration’s abuse of power. Our voices have been loud and clear. We do not want ICE and CBP agents on our streets or in our neighborhoods where they are unlawfully terrorizing people in our schools, day care centers, hospitals and places of worship. It reads: We expect an opportunity to meet with you to present our views, obtain clear commitments on your positions and understand how you will act to support our requests. We ask that you oppose any appropriations bill that includes increased funding ICE or Border Patrol and refuse to vote for any appropriations bill for DHS unless it: ● Strengthens restrictions on ICE and Border Patrol’s ability to conduct dragnet arrest operations and target people based on their race, language or accent, places of employment, or location at the time of apprehension ● Ends Border Patrol deployment to our cities and rejects its ever-expanding mandate in immigration enforcement; and ● Limits DHS’s reprogramming and transfer authority, including specifically preventing reprogramming and transferring funds for detention. We also ask that you make your opposition public and that you provide leadership within Congress to prevent funding to DHS that does not meet these conditions. Given that Congress is currently negotiating and preparing to vote on the appropriations bill, it is imperative that these urgent concerns be addressed without delay. We will be loud and public in opposing funding DHS without these conditions being met, and we urge you to join us and we are prepared to call out any elected officials who give DHS a blank check to terrorize our communities.
