i know their reasoning for why they don’t. but frankly this is a time when we need political bravery. actually acknowledging this and working in earnest toward a solution would help earn the support of the working class (a thing that is increasingly more important than your big scary donors)

i wish more people who worked on housing policy talked about decommodification as a necessity in addressing the housing crisis. so many cities are have a toolkit full of bandaids and few are willing to say “this will help, but only until we can end the tyranny of housing as an investment vehicle.”

“Touted as the tallest mass timber student housing development in the country, the project will be the first in Columbus to utilize the building technique, which uses engineered wood products like cross-laminated timber for the floor panels and glulam (made by bonding layers of wood together under pressure) for the columns and beams. The wood for the products comes from Alabama, via a company called SmartLam North America.

Proponents say that mass timber construction has several advantages over building with concrete or steel, including a quicker and quieter construction process, as well as a smaller carbon footprint. The new tower will have a one-story concrete podium that the main structure will be built on top of.”

one thing that’s certain is that this is the end of the democratic party as it was. there’s no clawing back from this, though there are some who are trying (looking at you, Minneapolis DFL. looking at you, hakeem jeffries. looking at you, FCDP).
