Hollow fields on a reclaimed peat plain west of Kanis, the Netherlands; on the right, an alluvial ridge of an old branch of the River Rhine. In summer, the fields dry out and the peat shrinks. The edges of the fields remain wet because of the ditches and shrink less. The result: hollow fields.
