I'm having one of those moments where I'm like. Annoyed by How Languages Are Taught again... And it's always the basic bitches that i come back to, the simple boys, the words or phrases that are like, fundemental. I can talk to you for hours about all the intricacies of topic particles, and comment phrases, and how inclusive topics marked by も (mo) are different from exclusive topics marked by は (wa). And I just realized a way way way way way simpler way to think about it. は (wa) is a word you put at the end of another word, to say [word] is different You can then say all the things that make it different. も (mo) is a word you put at the end of another word, to say [word] is the same You can then say all the things that make it the same. "different from what?" "same as what?" You decide that part. You figure it out. 田中さんはビールを飲んでいる Tanaka-san wa biiru o nondeiru. Tanaka-san is different (because) he is drinking beer. It means that Tanaka's drinking beer, and other people aren't. Someone else isn't drinking beer, but Tanaka is. That means I'm talking about Tanaka, and no one else. That's what an exclusive topic is. 中村さんもビールを飲んでいる Nakamura-san mo biiru o nondeiru. Nakamura-san is the same (because) he is drinking beer. It means that Nakamura is drinking beer, and someone else is too. Someone else is drinking beer, and so is Nakamura. That means I'm talking about Nakamura, and someone else. That's what an inclusive topic is. Who else am I talking about? Who else is drinking beer? Do the math idiot. The particles don't tell you, it's context. I just said Tanaka's different cause he's drinking beer, and then seperately I said Nakamura's the same cause he's drinking beer, so Nakamura and Tanaka must both be drinking beer. IF SOMEONE JUST TOLD ME. WA MEANS THINGS ARE DIFFERENT, AND MO MEANS THINGS ARE THE SAME, SO MUCH OF MY ENERGY COULD HAVE BEEN SAVED. I HAVE TO BUY SUBSCRIPTIONS AND READ GRAMMAR PAPERS TO KNOW WHAT THE FUCK A unique topic marker particle IS. THAT DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING TO ME. 私にもくれた Watashi ni mo kureta "To me" is the same (because) something was given. What is it the same as? Things going to the person i'm talking to, probably. Maybe they got something, and I'm saying I got something too. Man, when you're just told, "It's an inclusive topic marker, it marks that the topic you're talking about is something that's unexpectedly included with another topic or group of topics" like. what... It just means its the same. and then you say the things that make it the same. same as what? whatever you need. 50円もあれば買われた Gojuu-en mo areba kawareta. 50 yen is the same (because) if I had it, I could buy something. What is fifty yen the same as? Well, you're buying something, so, it must be the same as every single amount of money that would let you buy the thing -- so every single number above it. That means 50 is the lowest amount necessary to buy it. Congrats, you've just emphasized how low the amount you needed to buy it was. BUT ALL OF THAT PART OF THE MEANING, IS CONTEXT. all mo said is, 50 yen is the same. And that understanding is what translates that sentence into English as "If I just had 50-yen I could've bought it." AHHHHHHHH AND THAT'S WHY IT MEANS ANYBODY OR ANYTHING AAA. も (mo) can attach to indeterminate pronouns like 誰 (dare) "who/which person" or 何 (nani) "what/what thing" to mean "any/everybody" and "any/everything". In negative sentences, the meaning somehow flips to "nobody" and "nothing"... And you learn that, and its like, HOW? that's fucking magic. Those are very different words, and I don't know how to fit "too" or "inclusive particle" into that idea. 誰も知っていることだ。 daremo shiteiru koto da. indeterminate people are the same (because) it is a thing that they know. Everyone knows that. You're saying any and every random person you could possibly think of is the same as each other. They all know the thing. So it's something "everyone" or "anyone" knows. 何もない nani mo nai. indeterminate things are the same (because) they don't exist. "There is nothing there." Every random thing you could think of is the same as every other thing you could think of, because they all don't exist. So, "nothing" exists. is this how sisyphus feels am i gonna find out a somehow even SIMPLER way to break this down in two months and i'm gonna feel like i need to learn from square one all over again.... fascinating.
