I suspect there's a general problem where intellectual communities never discuss the stuff that's locally uncontroversial or obvious, that's passe and the fact that you find it worthy of discussion marks you out as a newbie. This dynamic impedes dissemination of knowledge that's taken for granted

Rats and rat-adjacents should really be stating the obvious more often, there's still a big backlog of ideas that need to be pumped into the water supply
The ideological purity signalling incentives for leftists require them to put more energy into distancing themselves from liberals, their outgroup, who they actually encounter and might be mistaken for, rather than MAGA, the abstract seeming fargroup who rarely appears in their filter bubbles

Greg Brockman is a scumbag. No excuse for funding wannabe dictators. It's such a bummer seeing OAI employees, many of whom I respect, complicit in this. I get that there are rationalisations, and it's hard to swim against the current of your social environment, but it's real banality of evil shit

Lots of people when making bets offer favourable odds to their opponent in order to represent their credence faithfully and maybe show off their epistemics, but from a selfish perspective it makes more sense to treat it as a negotiation and offer even odds as a starting point

Whenever a meme reaction image becomes uncool and falls into disuse, a very specific idea becomes inexpressible, and our communication is made poorer

On a person affecting view, you should care about future generations because many existing people care about future generations

The thing that most viscerally makes me believe real borderline magical artificial superintelligence is possible is watching Dan from The Slow Mo Guys getting hit in the face with a soccer ball, his neurons firing so slowly at this speed that he seems practically braindead

Explain why I'm wrong: Newsom isn't a viable candidate not because he has insufficient leftist bona fides, but almost the opposite: people hate coastal elites, coastal elites live in california, and he's the governor of california

Interesting that I've never seen a "trust the experts" debate wrt the "are LLMs intelligent" debate. There is genuine expertise to be had here, you need to know a bit about computer science to understand the full implications of turing completeness, the fact that NNs are arbitrary fn approximators

It's insane how deep the pro-death propaganda has sunk into culture. Every other movie has a villain whose selfish misguided unnatural quest for immortality was their undoing.
