TIL that the ratchet and clank games also have adaptive difficulty (like resi evil if I'm understanding right) which might be why I remember the games being rly stingy with health drops cuz I would play those games a ton as a kid, avoid lots of damage, and got pretty good at them

129. Unbeatable
Despite me not liking much of the story, the vibes and ending are fantastic. And I'm jamming out to the songs in this game too
I also existed in the same space as some of the devs when they did an event in Seattle and got a ribbon and that was cool
Unbeatable is a lot of things and so much of it speaks so deliciously to my aesthetic tastes. The game looks pretty incredible, probably the best style of 2d character sprites overlaid a 3d environs, the OST has great original songs that carry a vulnerable punk energy I love, and normally I don't give much of a shit about arcade modes in games since I'm narrative motivated, but I played some of it this time cuz I wanted to see the songs there and actually get comfy with this game's flavor of rhythm gaming. I even have some praise for the story, because the ending sequence is worth the playtime, and there are even parts I liked leading up to it, like the stellar voice acting, vibes, character art and such (the part when Proper Rhythm -All There Is To It- was the song for a fight was Super Cool, a verifiable Gaming Moment) But I do gotta say, I think I see what the goals of the story were, and I'm very fine with extending a lot of grace since this is clearly not a focus tested narrative sanded down for audience comprehension or tastes, but the story really did need to do more to bring the player into the world and characters. Speculating here, but I imagine the philosophy was to emulate the aimless powerlessness that is being alive in a western society in your 20s, in a sorta similar way that FLCL does with being a teen in Japan, but instead with the medium of an adventure/sorta visual novel game and world that has fantastical music/emotion summoned creatures of havoc or whatever, and both of these is not quite suited to being so inadequate with establishing the rules of the fantastic elements or character motivations and plenty more. Which isn't to say that being vague with details like this is necessarily a bad thing, but there's a certain lack of Some Thing to latch onto as an idea to follow from start to finish. Not Beat as a character with a backstory to wonder about, not Quaver's character arc, not the idea that the main two characters' goal is to make a band (it's just stated as a fact a few chapters in as if we're supposed to know that?), not the nature of the Silence, or the mystery of what happened to Quaver's mom and her band - all of which Could be valid points to latch onto that have a satisfying endpoint (except the Silence lol), so there's only the experience of the moment to moment to have as motivation to keep going when you're not sure what's important or interesting to pay attention to. Thankfully, the moment to moment is usually good enough, because I like the art, the characters are cool/entertaining/great voice acting, and the promise of beating up cops and good music is great, but when things feel like they should be important, character defining, twists in the story or anything like that, it's lacking weight, a certain electricity that says This Is It, this is What We're About, This is Who This Character is, etc. until the final sequence, when it tugs on a few strings hanging loose to tie together a genuinely powerful Story Moment. Not to say the chapter ending sequences aren't still cool, still bombastic and fun, but they could be even cooler if it felt like it was a character finally learning to let go of a comfortable but suffocating existence to embrace hardship and freeing chaos, if, you know, said "comfortable and suffocating existence" was properly established and emotionally resonant prior somehow, as an example, for Quaver and the first few chapters, instead of the characters just falling into said Bombastic sequences. It more feels like things are happening in front of you much of the time, and there's no possible way to follow along. Which is how I remember FLCL, but that was a TV show, and this is a game with textboxes where you press A to advance dialogue. There's something about pressing A on a textbox where you kinda have to shrug your shoulders, or worse, about what was said, rather than a show being able to move on without any input or thought from you. And like, maybe that's still all intentional, as a game with rough edges and punk aesthetics, like by default, the story moves on whether or not you success or fail many of the rhythm game sections, which tells me this is a story about rolling with the punches most of the time (even if I would really prefer to try again anyway, I wanna have fun), but in my estimation, a better view into the internal life of Beat and/or Quaver would have made what we have much better. And we do have dream sequences that do vaguely let us into Beat some!! But it's not enough as I couldn't feel those sequences informing/telling us more about the Beat we see outside of these sequences much, and Quaver needed More in the first few chapters to let us into her mind and world. That all said, the final sequence is still beautiful, true, and worth experiencing. It let me glimpse what the creators saw for these characters, what art means to them, that art is still worth making in this day and age. It's a glimpse into a world where rhythm games can manage to be the central gameplay for a narrative focused game, capable of delivering emotional moments worthy of changing lives. I liked that part a lot!! There was a palpable tension in that sequence as I wanted it to drop me right into a rhythm game section right at an emotional beat And It Did. I really hope the people who made this will continue making more, if that's what they feel driven to do. If not, they've still left me with something more profound than most games manage to do.

Silksong is very divisive for a lot of reasons but it really comes down to if you agree with "worldbuilding to the point that it's at the player's expense the sickest thing ever"

I think games industry as a whole will...Eventually move past this, but I think the magic of video games lies between "smooth enjoyable dopamine experience" and "frictional pushback for freaks that requires your attention, effort, experimentation", but rn it's the smooth brained stuff that's king
