A Rapid Review to understand the experiences of staff working in community based urgent and emergency care services that have been designed to reduce avoidable hospital admissions (in the United Kingdom or abroad (e.g., Australia, Norway).

Realist Review of Middle Range Theories (MRT). We will seek to understand how MRTs can be used to create causal explanations about how complex interventions interact with the workforce providing them.

We will complete a UK-wide mapping exercise to identify and characterise relevant SURGE services, data sources and intervention models. We will conduct deep dives into selected services to explore workforce organisation, challenges and sustainability.
