Here to engage with others who value and design inclusive, equitable, and accessible learning. Senior Professional Learning Specialist at CAST | UNH Affiliate Faculty | She/Her | Views are my own | #inclusion #UDL #a11y #AEM4all
If you understand UDL, you know how silly it is to think, "The behavior of my students shows me they are not ready for options". (And if you are a human being, you understand how easy it is to fall into that teaching thought-trap.) #inclusion #a11y #udl

I'll be talking with special educators next week about using UDL to design IEP meetings. How might we design IEP meetings with options for engaging, making meaning of information, and sharing thoughts and questions? #UDL #inclusion #a11y

I still think the most important goal on an IEP for a student with disabilities is friendship (as defined and described by the student and/or their family/caregivers). Meaningful friendship builds access to learning and agency as a learner. #inclusion #udl #a11y

College is for all students (including those with intellectual disabilities). Great conversation.
Episode 137 Deconstructing "College Material" is available! Do you think you know what it takes to be "college material?" Have you ever thought about what college is for anyway? This conversation might answer some questions you didn't know you had! @cast-udl.bsky.social thinkudl.org/episodes/dec...
Deconstructing “College Material” with Cate Weir
In today’s conversation, we talk about the history of and need for college programs for students with intellectual disabilities, what the benefits are to the students enrolled in these programs as …

In my course about inclusive education, students have a conversation (any format) with someone in their life about disability, accessibility, and belonging. Reviewing powerful student work, wondering: Why do we assign papers when we can assign conversations about changing the world? #a11y #inclusion

When we think about the design of a school using #UDL as a lens, we will likely find places, policies and practices that need to be undone. For example, a school is not universally-designed if students with complex support needs are denied access to the general education spaces and curriculum.

My colleague Michael McSheehan summarizes #UDL better than anyone I know: "Instead of asking if the learner is ready for the lesson, UDL asks if the lesson is ready for the learner."

#UDL is a framework that attempts to summarize variability in learning so that educators can better anticipate and plan for learning variability in designs.

The real power of #UDL isn't that it is learner centered design. It's real power is that it is HUMAN centered design that validates and empowers everyone to contribute authentically and with agency. That small change in phrasing contains massive impact. #EDUsky #UDLchat

Hi @ksuding.bsky.social! One of my favorites in that collection is Tips for Accessible Educational Materials #AEM. Accessible content builds access for learners. Accessible content honors the agency of learners, too. @cast-udl.bsky.social

Coming across a lot of content here that’s trying hard to have an aesthetic appeal. Quick reminder that good design is visually appealing and accessible. It’s not either / or!!

The truest measure of #UDL implementation is the absence of blaming for non-learning. We stop blaming students, families/caregivers, and educators and look instead for barriers in design.
