A personal nerdy project to document the look and feel of every station on Sydney Trains, Intercity, Metro & Ferries. A look at urban environments in and around Sydney. Also other transit & urban things. Just some nerd...

I've hit 2,000 followers here so it's time for a progress update! I'm not even half way up the Blue Mountains Line yet, and there's a new ferry map with a few new wharves added too.

I hope you're all enjoying my adventures as much as I am and it brings good vibes to your feed!

Gotta keep the Transurban gravy train going 🙃

Honestly I think it's part Sydney's challenging geography. Mountains on 3 sides, ocean on the 4th, lots of rivers, valleys, bays that are annoying to cross. We couldn't afford much Rob Moses-style clearing for fwys when it was fashionable, most urban mwys didn't come until tunnelling was cheaper

The station is at the north end of a tree-lined strip of shops, with a supermarket and a few quirky local businesses.

To the north is handful of more shops and this weird phone tower disguised as a clock tower. Beyond is a mix of low and medium density housing.

Another fun suburb!

The platform has some landscaping and heritage brick station building stain glassed windows. The heritage style benches and lamp posts are a nice touch.

The more modern lift and concourse contrasts with the older parts of the station. (2/3)

LEURA, 108km from Central, is another charming station - everything is so charming up in the Blue Mountains - serving retail strip of cute cafes and shops popular with tourists. It has two platforms cut into the sandstone, accessed from an overhead concourse on a road bridge, with a lift. (1/3)

Dishonourable mention to Ashfield platform 5, which is on street level but you are forced to go upstairs, through gates, then back down again to exit

Taking the story of the biggest new piece of public transport infrastructure delivered in Vic for many years, and turning it into a story about motorways and cheaper tolls for drivers. 🤮

Utterly embarrassing

What is Sydney's worst, most frustrating station?

For me it's Lidcombe - a very busy interchange. To get from T7 to the new apartment complex next-door you cross the street, walk 500m, cross the street again, go upstairs, thru the gate, downstairs, along two platforms to get back where you started!

Looks like the new Woollahra Station is planned to have two entrances. Good to see.

Honestly, all you need is red paint and buses.

When Sydney Metro CBD opened, the greater public, who weren't closely following the details of the project, realised for the first time what a game changer it was. The people loved it, the media loved it, and now they all want more.

Melb's Metro Tunnel looks like it's going to squander its debut?

The west exit leads to small park and a short row of attractive shops and cafes across the street, with a small supermarket.

I was impressed how vibrant the area was given most of the station's catchment is forest. It's not a big 'town' but it seems popular with tourists here to see the waterfalls.

The footbridge is sheltered and has modern glass lifts.

The east exit leads to a car park. You have to unnecessarily walk the length of the car park to get to the exit on a quiet residential street. Again it is disappointing to see missing footpaths here, common on this line. (3/4)

Inside the platform buildings are a waiting room, ticket office and amenities. It seems to be quite common on this line to have a little community library in the waiting room.

I thought it was interesting they kept the old heritage signs for the toilets, even though they have since moved. (2/4)

WENTWORTH FALLS, 103km from Central, is another charming mountains station serving a small retail strip and some low density suburbia. It has two platforms, accessed from a footbridge with lifts, several heritage brick station buildings and some landscaping on the platform (1/4)

The YIMBYs got the good seats because while the NIMBYs were outside waving signs for cameras the YIMBYs just... went inside

The provision of more housing around public transport in the Inner West is one step closer!

The north exit leads to a quiet residential street that doesn't even have a footpath.

The south exit leads to the highway, with houses on the far side. There's no pedestrian crossing here even though there's traffic lights. You have to walk up and over a bridge further down the road. Very annoying!

BULLABURRA, 98km from Central, is a quieter station serving some low-density suburbia. It has two platforms and a footbridge with no lift. The platforms are quite bare, with a brick waiting room and a second building that doesn't seem for the public. The station sits below the highway (1/2)
