DISLIKES: Mud
There are lots of designs like this one for the 'Pythagoras Cup', a device that self-empties at a certain point. But it's rather harder to find a practical one that can empty ~2 Litres at speed when the water is added only slowly. They mostly just trickle overflow 🤔 1/2..

I've been reading about air transportation for the Olympic horses, or as one service bills themselves: AIR HORSE ONE.

They use these handy individual stalls that can be loaded on carts and slid into place. Water and hay are provided, and a in-flight groom replaces all food/water every 2 hrs.

In the age of the tech bro, I feel this ought to be bigger news. The ICO is supposed to protect us from data abuse (even from govt agencies) but it seems they rarely enforce. My 1st guess was that chief John Edwards was a Johnson appointee, but apparently not. It seems he just likes a quiet life🤔

A 2.5K mono-split we are about to fit to replace a 20-year old one. In France, "Daikin" used to be supreme, but Chinese "Heiwa" seem to be taking over. Our supplier has switched over entirely, and claims they haven't had a single return. EUR ~1000 with mounting accessories. Wifi included. Pukka R32.

Soccer fans from 19 different countries will reportedly be blocked from visiting the US to support their teams in the World Cup. Russia & Israel continue to be welcome. Remind me how the USA got chosen as host? 🤔
Haiti qualified for the World Cup. But the Trump administration says its fans aren’t welcome.
The Caribbean nation joins Iran as World Cup competitors covered by travel ban.

UK's 750-page COVID report arguably arrives too late to have much impact, but is damning about Johnson's government. COVID was a relatively mild epidemic. It's sobering to imagine the consequence of a REAL one in the hands of such unserious and performative governments. Trump II in particular !

Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummings and Matt Hanock are all criticised for contributing to poor Covid decision-making.

We're surely at the stage now where none of the words that come out of Trump's mouth really mean anything. Just as your relationship with your cat or dog is non-verbal, so it is with Trump. It's now all just down to actions and body language. Nothing else to go on really 🤔

Village life. We played some live music in a basket-weaving festival in 2023. A lovely event, organised by a Catalan-accented club that did nothing but basket weaving! Sadly, it has just fizzled out and tonight was their "last supper". And before you ask, a Banasta is a Cistell without a handle 🤔

An ordinary looking roll of irrigation pipe, but special inside! The water leaks out through holes, but on the way, passes through a labyrinth that slows the flow and aims to equalise the distribution. Hoping to use it for an aircon project, to spread the condensate evenly along a garden hedge.🤔

A new one on me! A machine that dispenses candy floss (barbe à papa). Wave a bank card near this and you could be happy for a good 5 minutes 🤔

Keir Starmer is a decent and thoughtful man, and is qualified in law. So must understand what's happening in the criminal justice system - and yet his government has got itself on the wrong side of the argument. Yet again. Why is everything so hard for him? 🤔
This government has not taken a single meaningful step to tackle the causes of the horrendous inefficiencies in the criminal justice system, instead rushing to dismantle trial by jury.

Legal professionals have offered numerous alternatives to address the backlog.

Ministers are not listening.

A reassuring read if you're doom-scrolling through the Epstein files story.
I’m traveling today, so in a brief piece I address two questions I’ve seen a lot in the past 24 hours: 1) What if Trump blocks the files from being released by claiming there’s a new federal investigation of Democrats, & 2) Couldn’t they just tamper with the evidence and erase his name? Link below.

Autumn in the Pays Catalan doesn't have the riotous colours of New England. Leaving aside the planes and the vines, many trees are either evergreen or shed their leaves late - some even in February. But it's still a pleasant time of year, with the crushing Summer heat replaced by soft sunshine.

Catalunya is one of the loveliest places on earth, so why do they have so many words for "unfortunately" ? malauradament / desgraciadament / desafortunadament / dissortadament ... ?

I get such odd requests for 3D modelling and printing. How stupid is this one ? A SINK PLUG that you might find in your corner shop - except the dimensions would be wrong. This way, you get the right size, even of the quality is worse. Modelled in OpenSCAD & printed in TPU with 15% gyroidic infill.

Catalan has 3 different words for True(/Real): 'Vertader', 'Veritable' and (less common) 'ver'. This might seems excessive, but true / real / very / veritable overlap heavily in English as well! Shakespeare wrote "the VERY rats instinctively have quit it". I would have preferred 'veritable' 🤔

If your old hi-fi dies, it's probably the electrolytic capacitors. These are needed to get big capacitance in small volumes, but their lifetimes (esp at high temperatures) are shockingly low, sometimes only 1000 hours! Aluminium Polymer seems to be one answer. I just needed one - but had to buy 50🙁

A tiny Catalan grammar thing. This Manuel de Pedrolo short story has lots of examples of LLUR, the possessive "their", which in modern Catalan has largely given way to SEU.
But LLUR is still popular in the North, because it matches the French LEUR and the Occitan LOR.
(OK, I'll see myself out🙁)

This might be another of those big differences between UK and USA ("2 countries divided by a common language"). In UK, AIUI, your pension is safe almost regardless of what you do - protected against creditors, governments and adverse court judgements. It's deferred income - and it's your by right.

Actually, I've always been shocked by Bitcoin costs. The "proof of work" idea, although clever in its day, is energy expensive. A next block clearance can cost you ... an entire US dollar 🤔
Eric Trump: "You can send $500 million worth of bitcoin on a Sunday night at 11pm while having a glass of wine with your wife for virtually zero fees."
