Today, her team has deployed 180+ reef structures, built South Florida’s first shore-accessible snorkel trail, and engaged thousands of students through the Coral Rangers program.

“We’re not just rebuilding reefs,” she says.
“We’re rebuilding the relationship between people and the sea.”
Through underwater sculpture parks that double as coral habitats, Dr. Thomas is redefining restoration creating reefs that heal ecosystems, generate sustainable tourism, and inspire people to protect what they can’t always see.
In 2014, Dr. Shelby Thomas witnessed a 100-year-old coral colony die in just three days, a moment that changed her life.
